For those of you who are attempting to lose weight, get healthy, gain muscle, or anything fitness related, I have something to tell you that you aren’t going to want to hear – you don’t ever get to the finish line. At least not if you want to keep, or improve upon your results.
So many people make the mistake of thinking they can get to their goal and just go right back to their previous lifestyle, not thinking about how that lifestyle is what got them to the point of needing to change to begin with. I can’t tell you how many times I read about people who are starting over because they made their goal weight, stopped doing what they were doing and ended up right back where they started. They end up frustrated with themselves for thinking they could get away with going back to the way things were.
This is one reason why I don’t like the term diet, as often it stands for a temporary change. If you want real results that are sustainable there needs to be a lifestyle change. Diet typically means it’s something you either are doing or aren’t doing, instead of something you are living by. Instead, you need to focus more on something you can adapt to your lifestyle. It may take some time and a lot of trying new things, but there is something out there that’s right for everyone.
I personally have quite literally forced myself to like certain foods. When I first got really serious about fitness I had very poor eating habits. I ate nothing but unhealthy foods and couldn’t stand the taste of most vegetables or anything green. I used to think broccoli was the worst tasting food on the planet, but after a while of eating it consistently I’ve come to like it. The beautiful thing about foods is your taste buds change and adapt to the things you are eating.
I actually have a trick for this that you may want to try if there are certain foods you don’t like, but that you know are really good for you. What I did to help me get used to eating broccoli, was when I was making my salads, or any time broccoli was to be part of a meal, I started out by putting just one piece with my meal. I made sure to eat it on its own and forced myself to eat it. After doing that a few times I’d put two or three pieces, and soon enough I was eating it no problem. The trick is to be consistent. If you are only doing it once a month, then that’s not enough time to let your taste buds adapt to it.
I know nobody wants to eat foods they don’t like, but honestly is it really that bad to eat one piece of broccoli? It takes about six seconds to eat one piece, I promise you you’ll be just fine in doing so. If you find a certain food very difficult, then try eating it with other foods to lessen the taste. That’s how I got to like tomatoes. I started by putting them on sandwich’s one slice at a time and went from there. There you have it, “My Way” of learning how to like foods you currently don’t like. The best part is now that I’m so addicted to this lifestyle that all of the fast food and the other junk I used to eat sounds disgusting and the healthy foods now sound appealing.
Getting back to what I was talking about regarding the dangers of getting to your goal and quitting what you are doing; goals are great, but like I’ve talked about so much previously it’s the process of getting to your goals is much better and more important. The beauty of fitness is there is a never-ending opportunity for new goals to be obtained. You don’t have to worry about beating anyone or anything else, you just have to try to be better than you currently are. This means that when you reach a goal, it’s time to set another one. Being satisfied with the way you are is a very dangerous thing when in relation to fitness, because once you are satisfied, that’s usually when you start to let up. In my opinion, when it comes to health and fitness you should always try to be better than you currently are.
You don’t necessarily have to continue to push as hard when you get to where you want to be, although the chances are if you do get there then you’ll crave the feeling so much you’ll only want to push harder anyway. Regardless, you most certainly cannot stop what you’ve been doing and think you won’t go right back into your old habits and your old body. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – you can’t expect permanent results if you don’t make permanent changes.
