Strongman Squat Events: Formats, Rules & Records
How squatting is contested in strongman, from heavy singles to rep-out events, and how it differs from a powerlifting squat.
Squatting appears in strongman in several forms, from a heavy barbell back squat to apparatus-based squats using a frame or specialised machine. Unlike a powerlifting squat, strongman squat events are frequently scored for reps with a fixed weight, turning the lift into a test of leg endurance as well as strength.
The implement and the rules shape the event. Some contests use a standard bar, others a squat frame or a leverage machine that changes the loading on the legs. Whatever the apparatus, the demand is the same: drive a heavy load out of the bottom position, again and again, until the legs give out.

How squat events are run
A max squat event gives the field a few attempts to lift the heaviest single. A reps event fixes a heavy weight and counts full-depth, locked-out reps inside a time limit. A rep usually counts when the athlete breaks parallel at the bottom and stands fully upright at the top under control.
What it tests
Strongman squats reward leg drive, bracing and, in rep events, serious conditioning. Holding a heavy load on the back or in a frame for multiple reps taxes the whole posterior chain and the lungs, so pacing the set is as important as raw squat strength.
