The first qualifying stage of the 2025 CrossFit Games season — the CrossFit Open — is well underway, as the second out of three weeks commenced on March 6th. It started with the announcement of the 2025 CrossFit Open Workout 25.2, as the ceremony took place in Peoria, Arizona. Moreover, the announcement also features a duel between two elite female athletes.

The first week of the 2025 CrossFit Open went by splendidly, as thousands of people took part, testing their fitness and pursuing great placements on the leaderboard. The first week’s workout was a 15-minute AMRAP, which accentuates the endurance and mental strength of the athletes.

The second week of the competition brings the 2025 CrossFit Open Workout 25.2. It is a completely different challenge of fitness, as the athletes have to conquer pull ups, double-unders, thrusters, and many other exercises. Interestingly, it is a repeat of the Workout 22.3, which proved to be quite a challenge.

The Duel

Contrary to the duel in the first workout, which featured three athletes, the 2025 CrossFit Open Workout 25.2 was showcased by just two competitors. Both were a part of the female division and are some of the fittest women on earth. So, they were the perfect fit to demonstrate how the workout is supposed to be performed.

Emily Rolfe was one of the participants in the Workout 25.2 duel. She is a Canadian representative and a 5x CrossFit Games individual competitor. She came into the sport carrying high-level gymnastics skills but also established herself as one of the athletes with the best endurance. In turn, she excelled in multiple running events over the course of her career. Emily’s best finish at the CrossFit Games came in 2024, when she secured a bronze medal. She placed well in all other appearances, except the 2022 edition of the Games, when she had to undergo an emergency surgery due to a blood clot in her arm.

Sydney Wells was the second participant of the duel, also recognized as the twin sister of the 9x CrossFit Games competitor Brooke Wells. Sydney has not been in CrossFit for as long as her sister but has made a name for herself in a very short time. Within just a few years of doing the sport, Sydney managed to make her debut at the 2023 CrossFit Games. That remains her only appearance at the Games, but Sydney is determined to return to the elite show once again.

  1. Emily Rolfe: 5:10
  2. Sydney Wells: 5:24

Both women got off to a very strong start, carried by the incredible atmosphere courtesy of the live audience. Emily Rolfe utilized her experience, gaining some time in the transitions and maintaining a fast pace throughout all exercises. It caught up to her by the end, as she slowed down on the final set of thrusters. However, she still managed to beat Sydney Wells and take the win.

Sydney Wells also walked away happy, beating her time from three years ago by over a minute. So, she displayed incredible improvement and kept up with one of the greatest CrossFitters in the world. This was especially the case on the thrusters, since her cycle rate was much faster than that of Emily Rolfe.

Just one more workout remains to be revealed as part of the 2025 CrossFit Open, and it will take place on March 13th at 12 p.m. PT. Then, once all of the results are summarized, the athletes with the greatest scores will advance through to the Semifinals. A similar process will then take place, with the roster of athletes narrowing down to 30 men and 30 women for the 2025 CrossFit Games, which will take place on August 1-3 in Albany, New York.
