The 2024 CrossFit Games started on August 8th in Fort Worth, Texas, but the first event of the competition displayed an unfortunate situation. Namely, during the swimming portion of the first workout, one of the athletes, Lazar Đukić, went missing. The Serbian CrossFitter never crossed the finish line and was last seen in the water.
The first event of the 2024 CrossFit Games tasked the athletes with running 3.5 miles and then swimming an additional 800 meters. It was immediately clear that the swimming portion of the event would be extremely difficult, especially after such a long run. Well, after about 40 minutes of running and swimming, the majority of athletes managed to finish the event. Unfortunately, Lazar Đukić was nowhere to be seen.
Moreover, the Teams event that was supposed to take place just minutes after the Individuals was initially delayed slightly but has later been canceled. The livestream has been deleted after some of the fans pointed out that Lazar was seen struggling in the water, not too far from the finish line. The spectators that were in attendance were also asked to leave, with some stating that the emergency, as well as search and rescue teams, had arrived at the scene.
As per the WFAA news, the rescue team pulled out something that looked like a body out of the water.
In the worst-case scenario that the athlete did drown, it could have happened due to multiple reasons. Swimming in lakes is known to be dangerous because of the cold temperature, possible underwater obstacles, and multiple other reasons.
In this case, many fans are pointing out that Lazar Đukić and other competitors first had to run 3.5 miles and then swim. So, that long of a run could have caused cramps or affected Lazar in other ways.
