Protein has a number of benefits that are widely recognized, but Arnold Schwarzenegger has recently pointed out just how valuable it might be in the long run. The bodybuilding icon has shared his extensive expertise in the recent edition of the ‘Arnold’s Pump Club’ daily newsletter, revealing how specific types of protein can improve your life for decades to come. Specifically, as per Arnold, protein sourced from Legumes, Nuts, and Seeds can help you age 46% better.
When we think of protein, we immediately imagine the muscle-building benefits that it has. However, Arnold recently decided to review a study that analyzed the effects that protein has on the aging process. In turn, he deduced that plant-based protein has a significant effect on both the physical and cognitive aspects as we age.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Advice on Improving Aging With Plant-Based Protein
While many look to consume protein via steak, eggs, or some other form of meat, Arnold Schwarzenegger insists that it would be better to eat legumes, nuts, and seeds. He came to the conclusion by reviewing a study that involved nearly 50,000 people and spanned over an extremely long period.

“Research on more than 48,000 people found that you’ll age 46 percent better and have a lower likelihood of disease if you eat more protein from legumes, nuts, and seeds.
The long-term study followed the participants for decades, analyzing their dietary habits in midlife and how those choices impacted their health as they aged.”
The study shows that the people who ate more protein had experienced a more pleasant aging process, which included fewer chronic diseases on their part as well as the slowing of physical and cognitive decline. However, Arnold Schwarzenegger points out that plant-based protein has a significantly greater effect, improving the aging process by up to 46%.
“Those who consumed higher total protein were more likely to reach older age without major chronic disease or physical and cognitive impairments. Those outcomes were much more pronounced among those who ate more plant-based protein. (Animal protein was linked with some benefits, but not as many.)”
So, why is plant-based protein more effective? Well, Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed that it might be due to multiple reasons. Firstly, plants such as legumes, nuts, and seeds are often high in fiber, which can improve gut health. Moreover, the plants have a lower saturation of fat, as compared to animal-based products, which reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
The researchers believe plant proteins may be protective due to their higher fiber content, lower saturated fat levels, and beneficial effects on gut microbiota and inflammation.
This doesn’t mean you can’t eat animal-based protein; however, the best health outcomes result from including more plants in your diet.
Where to start? As per Arnold Schwarzenegger, the best options for plant-based protein sources are the following:
- Legumes (lentils, beans, chickpeas)
- Nuts and seeds
- Whole grains (quinoa, farro, brown rice)
- Soy products (tofu, tempeh, edamame)
Arnold Schwarzenegger is also not opposed to animal protein but does have some advice on this matter as well. Specifically, Arnold recommends eating cleaner products, which are unprocessed and contain less saturated fats.
“And if you’re getting your protein from animal sources, prioritize lean meats, fish, eggs, and dairy over red and processed meats.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger is a big advocate for the variety of effects that protein can have apart from being the muscle-building material. Just days ago, Arnold talked about another study and the fact that protein can play a big role in protecting your brain. He has also opened the minds of many on the effects of plant-based protein, including its muscle-developing benefits, physical health protection, and containment of cognitive decline.
