Janae Kroc is a groundbreaking inspiration for her strides as a transgender athlete. Now the documentary on her life is being rewarded for her story.
Kroc is many things; a parent, a veteran, a powerlifting world record holder. However, what she is perhaps most known for, is coming out as being transgender, and gender fluid. Some people have looked at this as controversial, as this topic typically is. On the other hand, many see this as an inspiration.
As a result, the story of Janae Kroc was perfect material for a documentary. In 2018, Transformer was released, documenting Kroc’s journey to transition. In addition to that, it chronicled the struggles that were present in her life as she tried to do so.
Check out a preview for the film:
The documentary about Kroc received some seriously good feedback. In fact, as she explains in an Instagram post, it was actually rated by Hot Docs as one of the best documentaries of the last decade. This was a recognition that she was honored to be handed.
“Transformer honored as one of the top 10 documentaries of the past decade by @hotdocs_ 😊👍📽 I’m still so greatful that @michaeldelmonte @brianhuntvisual @tadmunnings @kemp5838 @nicholasjtaylor_ did such an amazing job telling my story with skill, compassion, and honesty, thanks guys!”

Although it is uncertain if the docs are put in a specific order, Transformer is put in the number three position. Kroc has had to overcome a lot in both her professional and personal life, and that documentary did a lot to demonstrate that. Therefore, it comes as little surprise that it was so well received, despite the controversial nature of her story.
“‘They laugh at me because I’m different. I laugh at them because they’re all the same.’ -Kurt Cobain
There is so much pressure from society for all of us to conform, to hide our uniqueness, blend in and be like everyone else. We are all different in our own way and too many of us hide away the best parts of who we are for fear of rejection from the people around us.
I spent so many years of my life in misery because I was terrified of how people would treat me if they knew who i really was. It wasn’t until I was finally open and honest about who I am that i really experienced how amazing life could be.Now I live in a way i never thought possible and while it hasn’t been easy it has undoubtedly been worth it. I know a freedom and relief that few people do. So if you’re struggling to fit in and hiding part of who you are, just know that life can be so much fuller once you stop worrying about what other people might think and start living your life the way you’re meant to. ❤
Janae Kroc continues to break through boundaries, and establish herself as a true inspiration. Congratulations to her, and the makers of this film on this massive honor. It goes far to legitimize transgender athletes in strength sports.
