In the field of medicine and exercise science, Dr. Peter Attia is highly regarded, not only for his knowledge of health and the body but for his willingness to learn. He has collaborated with countless masterminds of wellness, such as Dr. Rhonda Patrick and neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman.

Dr. Peter Attia Discusses How Sleep and Stress Can Affect Your Testosterone Levels

Whether it’s addressing daily protein needs or breaking down a longevity-inspired supplement routine, Dr. Peter Attia brings a unique flair to his content, often providing his audience with actionable and effective steps for bettering their lives. In a recent YouTube video, Dr. Peter Attia explained how improving sleep and reducing stress were the most efficient ways to increase testosterone production naturally.

“I don’t think there is a bigger way to naturally increase testosterone than adequate sleep and reduction of cortisol. I think Hypercortisolemia, stress, probably has the greatest negative impact behaviorally on the endogenous production of testosterone, probably through the pituitary-gonadal axis.”

You may be wondering, how big of a role sleep and stress play on testosterone? Well, Dr. Peter Attia reveals that it can be as significant as 300 to 400 nanograms per deciliter. Considering the average adult male should have between 400 to 1,000 nanograms per deciliter, that is quite the boost.

“How much can it move the needle? Probably to the tune of 300 to 400 nanograms per deciliter. So if you’re not sleeping well and you are under a lot of stress, it’s very easy to end up hypogonadal.

Therefore, fixing that I think is far more beneficial than sort of the litany of supplements out there that may or may not have marginal benefit” Dr. Peter Attia shares.

Dr. Peter Attia makes sure to emphasize that this is specific for men and that there is a different answer in regard to women.

“Now, for women there’s a different answer but for men I would say that that’s the answer.”

Dr. Peter Attia isn’t the first person to share testosterone-boosting methods. Bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed a study that suggested incorporating high-intensity interval training (HIIT) three times a week can increase testosterone naturally.

“In the HIIT group, the participants lost fat and gained muscle — both of which increases testosterone. And we know from prior research that consistent exercise can also lower stress and improve sleep, which also can boost the Big T (although these variables weren’t measured)” Schwarzenegger explains.

Improving your health is important, and Attia believes sleep, nutrition, and exercise play a critical role. Dr. Peter Attia is consistently providing individuals with the tools and knowledge they need to lead longer more fulfilling lives.
