The biggest upset of the 2024 IWF World Cup so far came from Rizki Juniansyah who put up one of the greatest performances ever to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Namely, Rizki directly competed against Rahmat Erwin Abdullah, who was a favorite for the Olympics spot. However, Rizki did not give up and managed to set a new 365-kilogram (804.7-pound) U73KG Total World Record to shock everyone. In turn, he secured his spot for the biggest sporting event which will take place later this year.

Rizky Juniansyah’s 2024 IWF World Cup Performance Overview

Snatch

Rizki Juniansyah opened up with a 155-kilogram (341.7-pound) Snatch, which already indicated that he came in a much better shape than ever before, as this was very close to his heaviest lifts from previous competition. However, this time, it moved with ease, showing that he was capable of much more.

Despite everything, no one expected Rizki Juniansyah to make a humongous jump to 164 kilograms (361.6 pounds) on his second Snatch attempt. So, when he failed it, it seemed like he overestimated his capabilities.

However, with the 2024 Paris Olympics Qualification on his mind, Rizki Juniansyah knew that he had to complete the lift on his third attempt. Indeed, he managed to get the 164-kilogram (361.6-pound) Snatch above his head, setting himself up for the Clean & Jerk extremely well.

Clean & Jerk

Once again, Rizki Juniansyah opened up the Clean & Jerk session with an impressively heavy lift of 192 kilograms (423.3 pounds). However, he knew that this would not be enough to secure what he desired.

So, on the second attempt, Rizki Juniansyah decided to lift 201 kilograms (443.1 pounds), surpassing a tremendous milestone which also secured him the Total World Record and the qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics. His lift required a lot of effort and he spent a few seconds trying to stabilize it at the top, but it was ultimately validated by the judges.

Rizki Juniansyah also attempted to add two more kilograms (4.4 pounds) to his Clean & Jerk on the third attempt, but was unable to successfully complete it.

Rahmat Erwin Abdullah has been Indonesia’s favorite to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games for over a year. In the meantime, Rizki Juniansyah faced setbacks that seemingly put him out of the battle for the one qualifying spot that a country gets for one weight class. So, Rizki’s performance is nothing short of historic, especially since he is now one of the favorites for the gold medal at the Olympics as well.
