Are You Ready to Compete?

There is no minimum strength requirement to compete in powerlifting. Anyone who can safely squat, bench, and deadlift can enter a meet. The readiness score here is about competitive placement, not eligibility.

The score estimates where your total would place at your target competition level, factoring in DOTS and IPF GL points for bodyweight-normalized comparison. A score of 50+ means you would likely place in the middle of the field. 70+ means you are competitive for a medal.

Even if your score is low, doing your first meet is the best way to gain experience. Many lifters find they perform 5-10% better on meet day due to adrenaline and the competitive environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

The readiness score combines your DOTS points, per-lift estimated percentile, and target competition level into a 0-100 scale. A score of 50 means you'd place roughly mid-pack at your target level. The score is weighted toward your weakest lift since that limits your total.
For raw male lifters: 300 DOTS is a solid local competitor, 350 is state-level, 400 is national-level, and 450+ is international caliber. For females, these thresholds are approximately 250, 300, 350, and 400+ respectively. DOTS normalizes across bodyweight so heavier and lighter lifters can be compared fairly.
Absolutely. The powerlifting community is incredibly supportive of first-time competitors regardless of strength level. Your first meet is about the experience: learning commands, managing attempts, and building meet-day skills. Many lifters wish they had competed sooner.
Practice paused bench press, competition-depth squats, and deadlift lockouts. Learn the commands (start, press/rack, down). Use our Meet Day Calculator to plan attempts. Weigh yourself a few weeks out to confirm your weight class. Pack food, water, and warm layers for meet day.

Readiness estimates are based on general competitive standards and DOTS/IPF GL scoring. Actual meet placement depends on the specific competition field, federation, and weight class depth. These projections are for informational purposes only.
