The sport of powerlifting is blooming right now, as a number of athletes are close to setting World Record marks. Sonita Muluh, however, is particularly notable and impressive, as she often puts up record-breaking lifts. This was the case on March 15th, 2023, when Sonita shared a massive 280-kilogram (617.3-pound) squat to her Instagram. Not only is it a colossal lift, but also unofficially weighs more than the current heaviest squat in the women’s division of powerlifting.
Seeing that Sonita Muluh only used a lifting belt and knee sleeves to perform the lift, her 280-kilogram (617.3-pound) squat is acceptable by the regulations of raw powerlifting. So, comparing it to the current raw World Record of 278.9 kilograms (614.9 pounds), it is clear that Sonita is ready to set a new mark. However, having performed the lift in training, Sonita has only unofficially broken the World Record. So, April Mathis’ raw squat from the 2011 APF Southern States remains the heaviest in history.
Sonita Muluh’s 280-kilogram (617.3-pound) squat did not look as difficult as everyone would think, which makes it even more impressive. So, despite being on a cutting diet currently, losing significant amounts of weight, Sonita’s strength is still growing, making this one of the greatest periods of her career so far.
