Farmer's Walk: The Strongman Event, Rules & Records

What the farmer's walk is, how the event is judged for weight and speed, the technique it demands, and who carries the most.

The farmer's walk asks the athlete to pick up a heavy implement in each hand and carry them as fast as possible over a set distance. It looks simple, but it is one of the most complete tests in strongman: grip, core, posture and leg drive all matter, and any one of them failing ends the run.

The event is contested in two main ways. A speed farmer\'s walk fixes the weight and scores the fastest time over the course; a max or distance event keeps loading the handles until the athlete can no longer move them. Frame carries and farmer\'s holds are close cousins that test the same qualities.

How the farmer's walk is judged

In a timed event the athlete picks up both handles, walks or runs the course, and the clock stops when they cross the line. The fastest time wins; dropping the handles is usually allowed but costs time, and some events penalise excessive drops. In a max event the handles are loaded heavier each round until only one athlete can complete the distance.

Technique and what it tests

The lift starts with a strong deadlift-style pick, then it becomes a sprint under load. The athlete keeps the shoulders back and the torso upright, grips hard, and takes fast steps. Grip is the usual limiter: as the forearms fatigue, the handles start to slip, which is why hook grip and chalk are common.

  • Speed farmers: fixed weight, fastest time over the course wins.
  • Max / distance farmers: the weight climbs until the athlete cannot move it.
  • Frame carry: a single rigid frame carried like a yoke at the hands.
  • Farmer\'s hold: a static event scoring how long the loaded handles are held.
