The 2023 Shaw Classic just ended in Loveland, Colorado, on August 19-20, and was one of the biggest competitions in the world. However, being famous for featuring some of the heaviest implements in the world, even by the standards of professional Strongman, this competition had an increased risk of injuries. So, it was almost inevitable to witness a withdrawal during the competition, but luckily only one athlete was forced to take this step.
2023 Shaw Classic Withdrawals:
- Adam Bishop
Adam Bishop’s Withdrawal
Adam Bishop was the first and only man to withdraw from the 2023 Shaw Classic, as he announced the unfortunate news at the start of day two. As he revealed to the fans on stage, he had suffered an injury on day one, which could have gotten even worse had he performed the events on day two.
“Unfortunately, I felt a small tear in my pec on the Log Press. It kind of tightened up and I thought it would be alright… It got worse throughout the day, when doing the Atlas Stones yesterday I couldn’t grip at all.”
Adam Bishop still wanted to come out and perform the first event of the second day, Max Hummer Tire Deadlift, since it is his specialty. However, he sought advice from several experts who advised him to withdraw.
“I wanted to come out and do the deadlift. I just wanted to do something for you guys (fans). I’ve been talked out of it by some more experienced heads than mine.”

2023 Shaw Classic — Adam’s Performance
During the Log Press, which was the first event of the 2023 Shaw Classic, Adam Bishop got injured. This affected his performance largely, meaning he finished day one in 14th place after all four events were concluded.
- Log Press: No reps (Tied-Last)
- Wheelbarrow / Arm-Over-Arm: DNF Pull (13th-Place)
- Car Leg Press: 5 reps (Tied-10th)
- Atlas Stones: 3 Stones (13th-Place)
The possibility of getting injured remains a constant risk for Strongman athletes. That being said, this is not the first time that Adam Bishop has been injured, so he knows how to deal with it. Bishop injured his triceps last year as well, but managed to come back stronger than before and claim the title of 2023 Britain’s Strongest Man earlier this year.
Adam Bishop has been a professional Strongman for the past decade, during which he made 36 International and National appearances.
Although he has won two of those competitions, he is most known for his impressive stationary strength, especially in deadlifts.

Although Adam Bishop’s withdrawal from the 2023 Shaw Classic was unfortunate, the other 13 competitors luckily made it to the end of the competition without severe injuries. So, they all played a part in putting on an incredible show. It culminated with Brian Shaw claiming the title of Strongest Man On Earth and officially retiring immediately after.
