The 2024 World’s Strongest Man is taking place from May 1-5 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. However, the competition has been separated into two parts, the qualifiers and the finals. So, the first two days featured multiple challenges designed to reveal those most deserving of appearing in the finals of the 2024 WSM.

The qualifiers at the 2024 World’s Strongest Man competition saw the 30 athletes get separated into five groups of six athletes. All groups then performed the following events: Webster Stones, Deadlift Ladder, Sandbag Steeplechase, Viking Press, Car Walk, and ultimately the Stone Off.

Ways of Qualifying for the Finals

Each of the five groups was assigned two qualifying spots for the finals. So, the winner of every group after the five events was directly sent to the finals, while the process of determining the second finalists was a bit more complicated.

In order to grab the second qualifying spot, the second-place and third-place finishers in each group went head-to-head. The event that was a dealbreaker was the Stone Off, where they took turns lifting heavy Atlas Stones over the beam towards the side of the other man.

They used a series of six stones ranging from 140-kg (308.6-lb) to 200-kg (440.9-lb). However, if the battle lasted longer than six rounds, they kept using the heaviest stone. The third-place finisher started off the duel and the last man standing qualified for the finals.

Interestingly, by taking a glance at the 2024 World’s Strongest Man Finalists Roster we can see that only Mitchell Hooper and Tom Stoltman have stood on the WSM podium beforehand. So, we are guaranteed to see at least one new podium finisher this year.

The first man to qualify for the 2024 World’s Strongest Man finals was Evan Singleton, as he was the only man who mathematically won his group before the final event took place. So, he is clearly one of the favorites for this year, especially now after his tremendous performance in the qualifiers.

However, the biggest favorite for the win is definitely Mitchell Hooper, who is coming back to the 2024 World’s Strongest Man as the defending champion. He has been on an incredible run of results, and made sure to preserve his energy during the qualifying portion of the competition.

The other part of the greatest modern Strongman rivalry, Tom Stoltman, has also set his eyes on the title. Tom and Hooper have battled on a few occasions, and their duels have always turned out to be very interesting. The World’s Strongest Man competition is where Tom feels the most comfortable, having won it in 2021 and 2022.
