The 2023 CrossFit Games started three days ago for Age Groups and Adaptive divisions, but August 3rd marked the first day for Individuals and Teams in Madison, Wisconsin. Day One promised to be extremely exciting, since it consisted of a couple technically-demanding workouts. However, Roman Khrennikov and Alexis Raptis managed to grab an early lead and are heading to day two as overall leaders in their respective divisions.
The biggest shock of 2023 CrossFit Games Day One was Justin Medeiros. The two-time defending champion, Justin Medeiros, fell off of his bike twice on the first event, and then dug himself an even deeper hole with a 37th place finish on the second event. However, going into day two, Justin is sitting in 22nd place, so he still has a lot of work to do if he wants a shot at another title.
As many know by now, this will be the final year that the CrossFit Games take place in Madison. So, all of the athletes will look to make their final memory here a pleasant one. In addition, as some podium finishers from last year — Toomey, O’Brien, and Garard — have already withdrawn, everything remains open for any athlete on the field.

Day One Workout Recap For Individuals
Ride
The first workout of the 2023 CrossFit Games could not be any more simple. The athletes just had to perform a 40-minute bike race, with the goal of completing more laps than their rivals. After the 40 minutes were up, the athletes raced until the end of their lap. So, for athletes who performed the same number of laps, the time needed to cross the finish line was used to determine the exact position
The length of the lap in total was 2,600 meters, but it was dissected into two parts. One was a 2,400-meter ride on the bike, while the other was a 200-meter run. The circuit also consisted of many turns, as well as some incline portions, which made it much more difficult.
- Complete as many laps as possible in 40 minutes on a Trek Bikes Marlin 8 mountain bike.
Women’s Results
After 30 minutes of cycling, it was clear that Emma Lawson would win the event, but the race for second and third place was incredibly tight. While it seemed that Emily Rolfe was secure in second place, a cluster of six athletes followed behind her. With some teamwork between them, they managed to catch up to Rolfe, and it became a sprint race to the end.
However, Rolfe still managed to find a burst of energy and reclaim her second spot in the final moments of the race, beating Emma Tall by just a few seconds.
- Emma Lawson
- Emily Rolfe
- Emma Tall
- Katrin Tanja Davidsdottir
- Alexis Raptis
- Bethany Flores
- Gabriela Migala
- Jamie Simmonds
- Laura Horvath
- Karin Freyova
Men’s Results
Another year brings another amazing start for Jonne Koski, who picked out the max 100 points on workout one of the 2023 CrossFit Games. He is notorious for placing high at the start of competitions in the past few years, but has now reached perfection with an event win. He cycled a perfect race, often riding behind other athletes to reduce the air drag. So, when the last lap came, Jonne was still energized and ready for a sprint in the final meters of the race.
Jonne Koski was a part of a five-man bundle that held together from start to finish. So, it was unclear who would finish in the top three until the final few seconds. Jeffrey Adler ended up in second, while Jay Crouch finished just behind in third.
Surprisingly, the two biggest favorites for the 2023 CrossFit Games, Justin Medeiros and Pat Vellner, had a terrible start to the competition. Both finished near the bottom of the leaderboards.
- Jonne Koski
- Jeffrey Adler
- Jay Crouch
- Roman Khrennikov
- Bjorgvin Karl Gudmundsson
- Jelle Hoste
- Moritz Fiebig
- Dallin Pepper
- James Sprague
- Brent Fikowski
Pig Chipper
The Pig Chipper has already been featured in four CrossFit Games editions (2013, 2015, 2021, and 2022). It has always proved to be quite a challenge, even for the greatest athletes on the roster. So, CrossFit has decided to bring it back once again. This time it was paired up with sets of pull-ups and toes-to-bars, which made it a full-body workout.
For time:
- 10 Pig flips
- 25 chest-to-bar pull-ups
- 50 toes-to-bars
- 100 wall-ball shots
- 50 toes-to-bars
- 25 chest-to-bar pull-ups
- 10 Pig flips
Women’s Results
With the 350-pound Pig Flip being a new challenge for many athletes, they had to rely on their quick thinking and improvisational skills during the event. So, many of them took the wrong approach of going as quickly as possible. That is, all but one woman, as Laura Horvath strategically outsmarted everyone. She was significantly slower than Emma Carry and Annie Thorisdottir, but these two women got stuck on the final 10 Pig Flips. Laura nonchalantly approached the implement and finished the event with ease.
Interestingly, Arielle Loewen got second place, having finished one minute after Laura. Third place went to Alexis Raptis after an additional 30 seconds. So, Carry and Thorisdottir, who were in the lead until the final portion of the workout, did not even get into the top three.
- Laura Horvath — 13:50.40
- Arielle Loewen — 14:43.54
- Alexis Raptis — 15;14.94
- Emma Cary — 15:38.84
- Olivia Kerstetter — 15:49.36
- Alex Gazan — 16:13.36
- Christine Kolenbrander — 16:18.58
- Annie Thorisdottir — 16:20.26
- Baylee Rayl — 16:27.08
- Emma Tall — 16:32.72
Men’s Results
The Pig Flip for the men weighed 510 pounds, which made history as the heaviest implement in CrossFit Games history. Thus, it presented an unexpected challenge for all men, which brought some surprises. Similarly to the women’s division, Roman Khrennikov took his time on the last ten Pig Flips and took the maximum points.
Lazar Đukić also learned something from Laura Horvath and paced himself extremely well throughout the event. He was holding on to Roman throughout the entire workout, but was not able to overtake him on the Pig Flips. Brent Fikowski narrowly outperformed Pat Vellner to finish in third.
After falling off the bike twice in workout one, Justin Medeiros followed up with another bad performance in the Pig Flip, finishing in 32nd place. So, the defending champion has placed himself in a very unfavorable position for the remainder of the competition.

- 8 free-standing handstand push-ups

- 16 pull-overs

Women’s Results
After two consecutive 21st place finishes, Danielle Brandon crushed the gymnastic-based workout and easily won max points. She finished the entire series of exercises in just over three minutes, which was over 30 seconds faster than the second place finisher.
Despite not being able to outperform Danielle Brandon, Elisa Fuliano claimed second place with a near perfect performance. On the other hand, the battle for third was as tight as it could be, with Paige Powers beating Shelby Neal by 0.9 seconds.
- Danielle Brandon — 03:12.75

Men’s Results
During the final workout of Day One of the 2023 CrossFit Games, Cole Greashaber put on a stellar performance. His attempt at the Inverted Medley went smooth like butter and without any setbacks. So, he finished the event as the only man with a time under four minutes.
Justin Medeiros placed second with a time of 4:03 minutes and gave himself a glimmer of hope for the remainder of the competition. He remains in a very difficult situation, but this was definitely a big step forward. Bayley Martin was probably the biggest surprise in this event since he finished in third and beat some very big names.
- Cole Greashaber — 03:47.89
- Justin Medeiros — 04:03.63
- Bayley Martin — 04:25.68
- Jay Crouch — 04:27.72

Results
The first workout of the 2023 CrossFit Games for the Teams proved to be too difficult, as none of them managed to complete it in the given time cap. However, CrossFit Mayhem Independence was the closest to finishing. Moreover, they came out of nowhere to win the event, taking over first place just eight seconds before the time ran out.
Three other teams finished with the same number of repetitions, proving that this year’s Teams division will be incredible, despite the fact that Rich Froning is no longer competing.
