The 2023 Magnus Ver Magnusson Strongman Classic took place on November 10-12, in Reykjavík, Iceland. The three-day competition marked the third annual edition and featured nine events in total. Moreover, it brought in 12 of elite Strongman athletes from around the globe. In the end, after a long and tough battle, Tristan Hoath came out victorious.

Tristain Hoath only won one of the nine events, but his consistent high placings in other events secured him a tally of 85 points. He ended up outperforming Rongo Keene by five points, thus claiming the victory. The top three overall was rounded up by Shane Flowers who had 79 points.

Day One

Event One — Bag Toss Medley

The first event of the 2023 Magnus Ver Magnusson Strongman Classic was the Bag Toss Medley. For this event, the competitors had to throw six sandbags weighing 18-kg to 28-kg (39.7-lb to 61.7-lb) over a 4.43-meter high bar. The time cap was 60 seconds.

Shane Flowers took the win in the opening event of the competition, having finished all six bag throws in just 15.44 seconds. So, he averaged 2.5 seconds per bag, which is absolutely mind-blowing.

Pavlo Kordiyaka had a very fast time as well, but 17.05 seconds was only good enough for second place. Theodór Már Gudmundsson finished 0.66 seconds behind Pavlo and took third place.

Event Two — Natural Stones Press Medley

The second event of the competition featured four huge natural stones whose weight ranged from 100-kg to 122-kg (220.5-lb to 269-lb). So, the athletes had to pick up and overhead press each of the stones within a 75-second time limit.

Only two competitors managed to overhead press all four stones, so it came down to who did so faster. That turned out to be Sean Gillen, as he finished the event in 67.50 seconds. Thus, Sean took a maximum 12 points.

Rongo Keene was not much slower than Gillen, having finished just three seconds after him. So, Rongo finished in second place.

Event Three — Stone to Shoulder

The Natural Stones were once again used in the third event of 2023 Magnus Ver Magnusson Strongman Classic. However, this time the four stones only needed to be lifted up to the shoulder, but their weight ranged from 95-kg to 145-kg (209.4-lb to 319.7-lb).

Shane Flowers claimed his second event win of the day, since he lifted up each of the stones in 37.94 seconds. Moreover, he was the only man to finish the event in less than 40 seconds.

Tristan Hoath and Vilius Jokužys took second and third place, respectively. Both finished all four stones, with Hoath finishing in 44.36 seconds, while Jokužys finished three seconds later.

Day Two

Event Four — Mjolnir Front Hold

The second day of the 2023 Magnus Ver Magnusson Strongman Classic opened up with the Mjolnir Front Hold. During this event, the athletes picked up a 21-kilogram (46.3-pound) hammer and had to hold it with their arms extended in front of them. The goal was to hold it for as long as possible.

The defending champion, Rongo Keene, entered day two with determination and claimed an event win for himself. He held the Mjolnir hammer for a mind-blowing 77.98 seconds, which no one else was able to replicate.

Tristain Hoath was the closest to Rongo with a time of 73.51 seconds, so he still took a very valuable second-place finish.

Event Five — Husafell Stone

The next event on the schedule was the iconic Husafell Stone, which has made an appearance in many elite competitions over the years. The stone weighed 186-kilograms and the athletes were required to grasp and carry it for the maximum distance possible.

The Husafell Stone Carry is a test of strength, but also mental toughness, since the athletes need to dig deep in order to get a decent result. Well, Vilius Jokužys’ pain endurance was unmatched, since he dominated the event by a huge margin. He managed to carry the huge stone for 83.61 meters without dropping it, while the second-place finisher, Shane Flowers, could not go past 68.02 meters.

Event Six — Farmer’s Walk

The Farmer’s Walk was similar to the fifth event, as the competitors had to carry the implements for the maximum distance possible once again. The implements weighed 140 kilograms (303.6 pounds) and there was no time limit.

The Farmer’s Walk was a true test of grip strength and endurance, which proved to be suited to Mika Törrö. Mika had the best grip, as he did not drop the implements until the 38.75 meter mark. So, he took 12 points and the first event win of the competition.

Tristain Hoath continued to put up very consistent performances, finishing in second place with a final length of exactly 35 meters.

Day Three

Event Seven — Vertical Lift

The seventh event of the 2023 Magnus Ver Magnusson Strongman Classic was a “Vertical Lift”, but it is best described as a rope arm-over-arm pull. The athletes needed to pull the rope, which would then move the 100-kilogram (220.5-pound) upwards due to a hing at the height of 7.5 meters.

With all men completing the Vertical Lift, it came down to who had the fastest time. Well, it got down to just a few fractions of a second for the win between Tristain Hoath and Pavlo Kordiyaka. Hoath edged out the victory with a time of 11.37 seconds, while Kordiyaka settled for second with 11.52 seconds.

Event Eight — Deadlift

The second to last event of the 2023 Magnus Ver Magnusson Strongman Classic was the Deadlift for repetitions event. The given weight was 330 kilograms, while the athletes had 60 seconds to lock out as many reps as possible.

Pa O’Dwyer singled himself out on top with an impressive seven repetitions on the deadlift. Shane Flowers followed in second place with 6 reps, while Tristain Hoath got third with five reps.

Event Nine — Log Ladder

The final event of the 2023 Magnus Ver Magnusson Strongman Classic made the athletes lift four progressively heavier Logs. The weight ranged from 120-kg to 165-kg, while the time needed to complete the lifts served as a tie-breaker.

Rongo Keene put in a spectacular performance in the final event and claimed another 12 points to secure a silver medal overall. He completed all four logs within less than 42 seconds, thus outperforming the second-place, Pavlo Kordiyaka, by four seconds.
