The 2024 CrossFit Open has officially entered its closing days, as the third week of the competition brought Workout 24.3. The final workout was revealed on March 14th through a spectacular ceremony which involved two duels featuring some of the most credible athletes in the world.

The 2024 CrossFit Open proved to be extremely successful, as the announcement of each workout was watched by approximately 200,000 people live, while millions of others watched the video later on. So, the CrossFit Open has already shown that this season will be one of the greatest ones in the history of the sport.

Each of the 2024 CrossFit Open workouts were unique in their own way. So, the aspects that made the Workout 24.3 special were its simplicity, but also the endurance, since athletes had to endure multiple rounds of high-paced exercises.

Women’s Duel

Initially the only duel that was supposed to take place was the women’s one, but some massive changes happened just days before the announcement. So, although Tia-Clair Toomey was written down as one of the participants, she encountered some issues with her wrist and was in turn replaced by Sydney Wells. The other participant of the women’s duel remained the same and it was Arielle Loewen.

Sydney Wells has quickly risen to the top level of CrossFit, with 2023 being her most special year yet. She had previously made it to the Semifinals on multiple occasions, but last year, she finally managed to make her way to the CrossFit Games. Sydney ended up finishing in 28th-place, proving that she has what it takes to compete against the best.

Similar to Wells, Arielle Loewen also had the best season of her career last year, having managed to secure a bronze medal at the CrossFit Games. However, Loewen is a bit more experienced when it comes to competing at the highest level, being a three-time Games competitor.

Sydney Wells and Arielle Loewen displayed an incredible duel, as they went head-to-head throughout the entire workout. Interestingly, going into the final muscle-up round of the workout, both women were tied. So, it came down to who could do the last seven muscle-ups the fastest. Arielle immediately got to work, while Sydney had to put on some chalk. In turn, Loewen got the winning advantage, but Wells proved that she can keep up with the best.

  1. Arielle Loewen: 10:10.50
  2. Sydney Wells: 10:37.20

Men’s Duel

Although it was not in the initial plans, the men’s duel was added to the 2024 CrossFit Open Workout 24.3 announcement. Despite the short timeframe that the organizers had to arrange a matchup, they managed to call-up two incredible athletes, one being Roman Khrennikov. A man who has qualified for multiple CrossFit Games, but was often prevented from competing for reasons that were out of his control. In 2022 he finally got his chance to compete at the Games and seized the opportunity by placing second. Moreover, he followed that up by taking third place in 2023. Roman is now looking to secure the elusive first-place finish and become the CrossFit Games champion.

His opponent, Jay Crouch, is also hoping to start his season on a high note, having had a career-high eight place finish at the 2023 CrossFit Games. He is also a true veteran of the sport, having made appearances at six editions of the CrossFit Games, as well as 11 CrossFit Opens.

Jay Crouch brought a mind-blowing shape to the 2024 CrossFit Open Workout 24.3 announcement, not giving Roman Khrennikov any chance of beating him. Crouch took the majority of his lead on the muscle-ups which he often performed unbroken. So, having managed to keep up the fast pace until the end, Jay beat Roman by nearly one minute.

  1. Jay Crouch: 09:14.60
  2. Roman Khrennikov: 10:06.80

Then, the next stage of the 2024 CrossFit Season will be the Quarterfinals, which are set to start on April 3rd for Teams and April 17th for Individuals. So, with the playing field narrowing down significantly, the athletes will need to bring an even better physical form, which will also provide us with exciting battles and rivalries
