Annie Thorisdottir is a veteran in the CrossFit community, having been competing for over 15 years, even becoming the Fittest Woman on Earth in 2011 and 2012. Moreover, she is one of the most liked athletes in the field, which is why her recent decision might come as a surprise to many. Namely, Annie Thorisdottir has decided to miss the 2025 CrossFit Games Season.

By saying that she will miss out on the season, Annie Thorisdottir implies that she will not take part in the 2025 CrossFit Open. Consequently, she will not be able to qualify for the following stages of the season. Annie decided to make this step due to the tragedy that happened at last year’s CrossFit Games. Specifically, she was referring to the passing of Lazar Đukić during the swimming portion of the competition.

At the time of the tragedy, many athletes who were participating in the competition decided to withdraw. However, Annie Thorisdottir has now decided to miss out on the 2025 season as well. She announced her decision in a video made by the ‘Buttery Bros’, who posted a YouTube video about the impressive influence of Annie Thorisdottir, Katrin Davidsdottir, and Sara Sigmundsdottir in the fitness community.

The Buttery Bros followed the “Dottir’s” at the 2025 Wodapalooza Miami, highlighting their performance but also allowing them to express their opinions on multiple topics. One point of interest turned out to be the CrossFit Games, which Annie Thorisdottir used to voice her thoughts.

“I love CrossFit. It has been my life for like half of my life. I will continue to do CrossFit for the rest of my life. I will continue to support the community, these things, and the sport of it, absolutely. It feels personal to me.”

However, although she dedicated a large portion of her life to competitive CrossFit, Annie Thorisdottir revealed immense disappointment in the approach that the organization took after the passing of Lazar Đukić. That includes both the circumstances under which the tragedy happened but also the lack of significant changes and acknowledgement in the period after it.

“I feel very, very disappointed in how they have handled everything and what happened; obviously, that is the biggest thing. But then how they have handled it going forward is even more disappointing and devastating.”

With that said, Annie Thorisdottir revealed that she will miss out on the CrossFit Open for the first time since 2009. So, despite being one of the only remaining active athletes from that period, Annie’s is making the difficult decision to withdraw.

“So for moral reasons, I cannot partake in the Open this year, and that will be the first year since 2009 or since the Open started. I will not participate in the CrossFit Games Season. We will still do the workouts at my gym and everything, but I can’t support it,” said Thorisdottir.

Since Annie Thorisdottir announced her decision while walking next to another 2x Fittest Woman on Earth, Katrin Davidsdottir, her fellow countrywoman decided to express her opinion as well. Katrin shares Annie’s beliefs, revealing that she would have also withdrawn from the season. However, Katrin has retired from CrossFit already.

“I have a very strong sense of what’s right and what’s wrong, and I feel like it’s so wrong, and I do not feel proud to wave that flag. I have already announced my retirement. So, I never planned on competing in this season, but I wouldn’t. I don’t judge anybody that does; everybody has their own reasons,” said Davidsdottir.

Later in the video, Annie Thorisdottir revealed that she will not judge any athletes who decide to take part in the 2025 CrossFit Games Season, since it is impossible to know what is happening in the lives of others. So, her decision is completely personal and based on her own moral standings.

Annie Thorisdottir also missed last year’s season, but that happened due to her pregnancy. On the other hand, her decision to withdraw from the 2025 CrossFit Games Season was made based on moral reasons. The season will start on February 27th with the announcement of the first CrossFit Open workout. The Open will be followed by in-person and virtual Semifinals, with only 30 men and 30 women going through to the 2025 CrossFit Games.
