“10,000 steps a day is a pretty good landmark for a lot of people. Some people can do more. Some people can get away with less. Generally, north of about 8-9,000, the metadata on tons and tons of people walking around that the health and longevity benefits peak and sort of plateau around that 8-10,000 step number.”

While getting 10,000 steps daily is a general rule of thumb, Dr. Mike Israetel explains it can vary depending on the individual.

“But it’s really context-dependent. Some people are waiters and they walk 20,000 steps per day and they’re in amazing shape, so generally, I would say better advice is like as many steps as you can get until you’re really fatigued and you say like fuck that” Dr. Israetel said.

To keep it simple, Dr. Israetel suggests doing as many steps as possible just before getting fatigued. He also explains that achieving 10,000 steps wasn’t a hard rule, but you should aim to average that number throughout the week.

“Whatever number is just shy of you getting pretty fatigued is really good to try to keep up and that’s also on average. Not every day. If over the week you are averaging around 10,000 or 12,000 or 14 or 18, whatever that number is for you that’s just shy of you getting really tired, that’s a really really good thing.”

Fellow health expert and bodybuilding great Arnold Schwarzenegger has also weighed the power of walking, recently asserting that faster walkers live longer. He adds that you’ll see benefits from as little as 8,000 steps per day:

“It’s why we frequently recommend walking. And while the goal of 10,000 steps per day was a made-up number, research does suggest you’ll see benefits with as little as 3,000 to 4,00 steps per day, and see a significant increase in longevity up to at least 8,000 steps per day.”

Dr. Mike Israetel provides simple-to-understand principles that can be applied to daily life regardless of where you are in your fitness journey. Getting enough steps daily is crucial for overall health. To ensure you’re meeting this goal, Dr. Mike Israetel advises walking as much as possible without reaching the point of fatigue. This approach helps maintain a consistent activity level without overexertion, promoting long-term health and well-being.
