Hyon Sim Won has continued her dominance in the 45-kilogram weight class at the 2024 IWF World Cup, where she set multiple World Records. Won competed on the first day of the competition, which is taking place from March 31st to April 11th in Phuket, Thailand. So, she opened the competition in style, managing to set new World Records in all three of the events: Snatch, Clean & Jerk, and Total.

Hyon Sim Won’s 2024 IWF World Cup Performance Overview

Snatch

Hyon Sim Won’s first Snatch attempt came out to 80 kilograms (176.4 pounds), which was nearly 2x her bodyweight. On the other hand, none of her rivals managed to build up anywhere near that weight across all three of their attempts.

So, having already gotten the lead after one attempt, Hyon Sim could turn her sights on the World Record. However, before that, Won decided to snatch 85 kilograms (187.4 pounds) on her second attempt, using it as a final warm-up before attempting the record-breaking lift.

In order to do so, Hyon Sim Won had to load 87 kilograms (191.8 pounds) for her final attempt. She came out on the platform full of confidence, which then transferred over to the actual attempt, which she completed with ease.

  • 85 kilograms (187.4 pounds)
  • 87 kilograms (191.8 pounds) — U45KG World Record

*Hyon Sim Won held the old U45KG Snatch World Record of 86 kilograms (189.6 pounds), which she set at the 2024 Asian Weightlifting Championships.

Clean & Jerk

While not many U45KG weightlifters are capable of performing a 100-kilogram (220.5-pound) Clean & Jerk, Hyon Sim used that weight for her first attempt. She then jumped up to 106 kilograms (233.7 pounds) for her second attempt, which still seemed far below her capabilities.

Finally, Won loaded 109 kilograms (240.3 pounds) for her last attempt. Starting off, she seemed to struggle during the Clean portion, especially when she started squatting upwards. So, the tension rose high while she was preparing to Jerk the weight overhead. Surprisingly, the Jerk was much easier. So, Won found herself with a new World Record under her belt.

  • 100 kilograms (220.5 pounds)
  • 106 kilograms (233.7 pounds)
  • 109 kilograms (240.3 pounds) — U45KG World Record

There was no previous U45KG Clean & Jerk World Record, as no athlete had exceeded the World Standard of 108-kg (238.1-lb) which was set by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). So, Hyon Sim is the first woman to lift more than the World Standard, making her lift the World Record.
