Mal O’Brien has made a swift breakthrough to the top of the CrossFit rankings and claimed a lot of success. However, as per her recent announcement on Instagram, Mal will not be taking part in the 2024 CrossFit Season.

Mal O’Brien’s announcement video also revealed why she came to the decision to miss the 2024 CrossFit Season. Namely, she wants to take care of her well-being, as she has spent the majority of her life fully dedicating herself to the sport of CrossFit.

She recently decided to move to Hawaii, where she has managed to find her peace. Alongside that, she realized that it is not in her best interest to immediately start preparing for the 2024 CrossFit Season, which starts as soon as February 29th.

“I feel very at peace. I have felt very overwhelmed, frustrated, and anxious over the past few months. Now, being here in Hawaii, I feel at peace and like it is a fresh start for myself.

My focus overall is definitely my well-being as a person, because it is not something that I focused on almost ever. That being said, I will not be competing in the 2024 season. I truly feel that it is not what I need in my life right now.”

Not many athletes have managed to put pressure on Tia-Clair Toomey, but Mal O’Brien was one of them. She did so at the 2022 CrossFit Games, where she claimed the silver medal at 18-years-old. So, that serves as the greatest testament to her capabilities in the sport and the fact that she is one of the greatest prospects to ever step on the competition floor.

In 2023, Mal O’Brien dominated the opening two stages of the season, which were the Open and the Quarterfinals. However, in a surprising statement, Mal revealed that she was withdrawing from the 2023 CrossFit Semifinal, stating that she was facing personal challenges that required her attention and care.

Now, Mal O’Brien will look to enjoy her life and take care of everything that she has neglected over the years. However, although she has not confirmed her return to CrossFit in the upcoming years, Mal has certainly not stated that this is the ultimate end of her career.

“Just because I am not competing in the 2024 season does not mean that I will not compete ever. I will not put a timeline on anything, and I am just letting it play out and seeing what feels best for me.”

Moreover, Mal O’Brien will continue training, but will now have the freedom to program the workouts to her needs. She will also be releasing content and creating some of her own stuff.
