Olivia Reeves displayed some new improvements and claimed an impressive victory at the 2024 IWF World Cup. The young weightlifter competed in the 71-kilogram weight class, which took the stage on April 7th in Phuket, Thailand. Olivia dominated everyone, set new personal records in Snatch, Clean & Jerk, and Total, ultimately taking home the gold medal.

Olivia Reeves’ 2024 IWF World Cup Performance Overview

Snatch

Olivia Reeves’ first attempt on the Snatch came out to 112 kilograms (246.9 pounds), which was 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) lighter than what her two biggest rivals, Liao Guifang and Kuk Hyang Song, opened up with. So, initially, it seemed like Olivia was behind them.

However, Olivia Reeves equaled their efforts with a 115-kilogram (253.5-pound) Snatch on her second attempt. Shortly after, Olivia decided to go for a new PR on her final attempt, loading 118 kilograms (260.1 pounds). Using impeccable technique, Olivia managed to successfully complete and set a new PR.

On the other hand, an interesting turn of events happened in the case of Liao and Song, as both women had two attempts at a 120-kilogram (264.6-pound) Snatch, but neither managed to successfully lift it. Consequently, Olivia Reeves finished the event with the best result and took the lead going into the Clean & Jerk.

Clean & Jerk

Olivia Reeves knew that defending her lead against the Clean & Jerk World Record Holder, Kuk Hyang Song, and the Total World Record Holder, Liao Guifang, would be a difficult task. However, she was determined to put up the heaviest Clean & Jerk of her career in an attempt to win the competition.

Olivia Reeves once again had a perfect performance, successfully performing all three of her attempts. The heaviest one came out to 150 kilograms (330.7 pounds), exceeding her former PR by 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds).

Both Kuk Hyang Song and Liao Guifang set their goals on a 154-kilogram (339.5-pound) Clean & Jerk, which would have secured them the overall win. However, neither of the two was capable of lifting that much weight on the day, meaning that Olivia Reeves finished in first place in both the Clean & Jerk and overall.

It is important to note that Olivia Reeves is just 20-years-old and is managing to beat some extremely experienced athletes. So, it is clear that she is USA’s greatest female prospect in the sport. Moreover, Olivia has now added yet another title to her impressive resume, which already featured gold medals from Pan American Games, Junior IWF World Championships, and more.

The 2024 IWF World Cup also saw Hampton Morris become the first American athlete to set a World Record in the past five decades. However, Olivia Reeves now shows that the wait for another World Record from Team USA will not last that long, as she is on the verge of setting records across all three events.
