The 2024 Strongest Man On Earth took place on August 17-18 in Colorado, and it was easily among the top five biggest Strongman competitions of the season. It featured 16 elite athletes along with eight difficult events, which, combined, produced an incredible show. Well, after two days of competing, Mitchell Hooper turned out to be the one with the most points, thus taking home the title.
Following the end of day one, it seemed that Mitchell Hooper and Hafthor Bjornsson’s battle would carry on to the second day. However, Hafthor ended up dropping a few points, while Mitchell Hooper was determined on placing top three in all events. So, Hooper’s lead grew larger, and it was pretty much obvious that he would take the title going into the final event.
On the other hand, the second-place finish was also impressive for Hafthor Bjornsson, who is still fresh out of retirement. He also won five out of eight events at the competition, which is an achievement on its own. However, he dropped a lot of points on overhead pressing events, which ultimately cost him the title.
The battle for the bronze medal was arguably the most interesting one, since three men found themselves within just 0.5 points going into the final event of the competition. Lucas Hatton was the most successful out of the three, beating his rivals on the Fingal Fingers x Power Stairs Medley and securing a podium spot for himself.

Day Two
Event Five — Squat for Reps
To start day two of the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth, the athletes had to perform a squat. Brian Shaw decided to make a new machine specifically for this event, which turned it into a unique challenge. Moreover, the men had to push themselves in order to perform as many reps as possible.
Although it was said that the weight of the squat came out to 368 kilograms (810 pounds), ten out of 16 athletes did not manage to get a single rep on the board. It seemed that they struggled to get comfortable in the machine, as the movement was a bit different from the standard barbell squat.

However, Mitchell Hooper had no trouble at all with the machine, finding the perfect technique and locking out 10 repetitions. No one else came even close to the Canadian, as the second-place finisher, Lucas Hatton, completed half as many reps.
Bobby Thompson finished in third place with a score of four reps, thus pushing Hafthor Bjornsson down to fourth. This meant that Hooper added even more points between him and and ‘The Mountain’.
- Mitchell Hooper — 10 reps
- Lucas Hatton — 5 reps
- Bobby Thompson — 4 reps
- Hafthor Bjornsson — 3 reps
- Trey Mitchell — 1 rep

Event Six — Power Medley
The sixth event of the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth was a medley consisting of a Wheelbarrow Carry and an arm-over-arm vehicle pull. It was an incredibly difficult task, putting a lot of stress on the grip muscles. Having to hold and push a wheelbarrow and follow it up by pulling a full-sized vehicle, all while trying to go as fast as possible, was guaranteed to leave the men exhausted.
None of the 16 Strongmen managed to finish the entire Power Medley event. So, it came down to who crossed more distance within the 90-second time cap.
Hafthor Bjornsson claimed his fourth event victory of the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth, cruising through the Wheelbarrow carry and pulling the tractor over a significant portion of the course. His final distance came out to 34-feet and 3-inches, which was just enough to beat his biggest rival currently.
Mitchell Hooper finished in second place with a distance of 32-feet and 5-inches, once again placing near the top and not allowing Hafthor to get within striking distance. The third place went to Austin Andrade, who was the only other man to get over 30-feet in the event. Moreover, this helped Andrade push through to third-place overall.

Event Seven — Circus Dumbbell Medley
The second-to-last event of the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth was the Circus Dumbbell Medley. In this event, the athletes rushed to pick up and overhead press five progressively heavier dumbbells ranging in weight from 102-kg (225-lb) to 129-kg (284.5-lb). The fastest time won.
There is one guarantee when it comes to Lucas Hatton and that is that he always puts on a show during the dumbbell overhead press event. So, on this occasion, Lucas was the only one to finish all five implements, proving that he is in fact the king of this event. His static strength is nothing short of spectacular and it will only get better in the future.
The Circus Dumbbell is also a signature event for Oleksii Novikov, who managed to get a top three finish for the first time at the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth. The 2020 WSM champion has been battling injuries for a long time now, which is why his performances are far from what they used to be. Hower, by locking out four implements Oleksii managed to beat everyone except Hatton.
Mitchell Hooper maintained his streak of top three finishes and did so by lifting three dumbbells in a time of 29.13 seconds. Many other athletes lifted the same number of implements but were not quick enough to beat Hooper.

Event Eight — Fingal Fingers x Power Stairs
The event that wrapped up the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth competition was a medley consisting of two parts. The first was Fingal Fingers, which were basically long and heavy metal rods that had to be flipped from one side to the other. After finishing that task, the men moved on to the Power Stairs, where they had to carry two implements (250-kg / 551-lb and 272-kg / 600-lb) up a flight of five stairs each.
Hafthor Bjornsson was the fastest out of the few men that finished the entire event, meaning that he claimed his fifth event win at the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth. Although he didn’t win the title, Hafthor has shown why he is arguably the greatest Strongman in history, being the best in multiple of the core events.
Evan Singleton finished in a time of 45.60 seconds, which was 0.33 seconds slower than Hafthor. Despite having to settle for second-place, Evan walked away satisfied to be the only man who challenged Hafthor in such a fast-paced event. Tom Stoltman rounded up the top three in the final event with a time of 51.96 seconds.
Mitchell Hooper finished in fourth place in the event, which also secured him the title of 2024 Strongest Man On Earth. Interestingly, this was his first and only event where he placed out of the top three in the entire competition.
- Hafthor Bjornsson — 45.27 s
- Evan Singleton — 45.60 s
- Tom Stoltman — 51.96 s

- Austin Andrade — 6 Stairs
- Bobby Thompson — 6 Stairs
- Thomas Evans — 5 Stairs
- Mathew Ragg — 5 Stairs
- Pavlo Kordiyaka — 5 Stairs
- Oleksii Novikov — 2 Fingers

Day One
Event One — Raw Max Deadlift
The first event of the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth featured one of the core Strongman exercises — the Deadlift. Brian Shaw decided to have it be the first event and allow the athletes to showcase their full strength while being rested and energized. Moreover, they were only allowed to use a lifting belt and lifting straps. Notably, the athletes were allowed to pick their own weight jumps across attempts as well.
As everyone expected, Hafthor Bjornsson managed to come out on top in the deadlift event and did so without much struggle. He did not even have the need to perform the final attempt, as his second one of 450 kilograms (992 pounds) was enough to secure him the max points. However, it was clear that he was capable of lifting even more weight if that turned out to be necessary.
Mitchell Hooper knew that the chances of beating Bjornsson were slim. So, he decided to go all out for second place and deadlift 438 kilograms (965.6 pounds). With some clever picking of the weight jumps, Hooper managed to secure himself the spot behind Hafthor, which also brought him a lot of points.
Austin Andrade and Bobby Thompson both managed to deadlift 436 kilograms (961.2 pounds). In turn, they had to settle for a tie in third-place, which was still impressive considering what kind of rivals they went up against.
Some athletes had their attempts invalidated by the powerlifting icon Ed Coan, who was the judge for the event. Specifically, the bar slid down into the tips of their fingers, while the rules stated that it had to remain in their palms. Moreover, Mathew Ragg seemed like he could have placed in the top three. However, his ambition of beating Hafthor and deadlifting over 453.6 kilograms (1,000 pounds) on his final attempts ended up costing him a lot of points.
- Hafthor Bjornsson — 450 kilograms
- Mitchell Hooper — 438 kilograms
- Austin Andrade — 436 kilograms
- Bobby Thompson — 436 kilograms
- Mathew Ragg — 429 kilograms
- Evan Singleton — 420 kilograms
- Trey Mitchell — 411 kilograms
- Tom Stoltman — 409 kilograms
- Wesley Derwinsky — 397 kilograms
- Tristain Hoath — 393 kilograms
- Thomas Evans — 388 kilograms
- Lucas Hatton — 388 kilograms
- Oleksii Novikov — 384 kilograms
- Aivars Šmaukstelis — 372 kilograms
- Pavlo Kordiyaka — 350 kilograms
- Maxime Boudreault — 332 kilograms
Event Two — Log / Axle Overhead Medley
For the overhead medley, the athletes had to overhead press five implements of different shapes and weights. So, the goal of the event was to finish all tasks in the shortest amount of time possible.
First Implement: 163-kg (360-lb) Log
Second Implement: 170-kg (375-lb) Axle
Third Implement: 177-kg (390-lb) Log
Fourth Implement: 184-kg (405-lb) Axle
Fifth Implement: 191-kg (421-lb) Log
Mitchell Hooper has always been one of the quickest athletes in any type of medley event, and this one was no different. Specifically, Hooper finished all five implements in 100.33 seconds, just a fraction of a second faster than the second-place finisher. Moreover, the Canadian did not even use the split-jerk technique that he is known for, as it would have likely made him slower overall.
Trey Mitchell finished in second place in the Overhead Medley event, which came as a surprise to many. The 2x Shaw Classic champion had low expectations for the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth, as he has still not fully recovered from his Achilles tendon tear. However, his incredible power allowed him to lift all five implements in just 100.90 seconds.
Tom Stoltman was the only other man to finish the entire event. However, he needed 12 seconds more than Trey to do so. Still, it marked an incredible improvement in his overhead pressing power, since he has lost a lot of points in similar events throughout previous years.
- Mitchell Hooper — 5 in 100.33 s
- Trey Mitchell — 5 in 100.90 s
- Tom Stoltman — 5 in 112.06 s
- Thomas Evans — 4 in 77.74 s
- Lucas Hatton — 3 in 43.78 s
- Austin Andrade — 3 in 60.75 s
- Maxime Boudreault — 3 in 77.39 s
- Bobby Thompson — 2 in 19.51 s
- Hafthor Bjornsson — 2 in 28.20 s
- Pavlo Kordiyaka — 2 in 28.71 s
- Evan Singleton — 2 in 31.10 s
- Aivars Šmaukstelis — 1 in 5.56 s
- Oleksii Novikov — 1 in 7.33 s
- Mathew Ragg — 1 in 7.48 s
- Wesley Derwinsky — 1 in 8.19 s
- Tristain Hoath — 1 in 12.42 s
Event Three — Keg Toss for Max Height
The third event of the competition was set to be a spectacle from the start, as multiple athletes were eager to set a new World Record. In order to do so, they had to throw a 15-kilogram (33-pound) Keg over a beam that increased in height through rounds. In turn, the last man standing won.
Hafthor Bjornsson found himself sitting on top of the leaderboards for the second time on day one of the competition. He crushed each round of keg tosses, needing just one attempt to clear the beam despite having three attempts at his disposal. Ultimately, Hafthor decided to go for the World Record and amuse the crowd. In turn, the beam was raised to a height of 7.77 meters (25-ft 6-in). However, Hafthor crushed that toss with ease as well, setting a new World Record and taking max points.
Six athletes were chasing down Hafthor Bjornsson, but all of the ultimately got stopped at the exact same height. So, Hooper, Ragg, Singleton, Stoltman, Derwinsky, and Evans, all managed to toss the keg to a height of 7.32 meters (24-feet) and thus had to settle for a tie.
- Hafthor Bjornsson — 7.77 meters
- Mitchell Hooper — 7.32 meters
- Evan Singleton — 7.32 meters
- Wesley Derwinsky — 7.32 meters
- Mathew Ragg — 7.32 meters
- Tom Stoltman — 7.32 meters
- Thomas Evans — 7.32 meters
- Trey Mitchell — 6.71 meters
- Austin Andrade — 6.71 meters
- Bobby Thompson — 6.71 meters
- Aivars Šmaukstelis — 6.71 meters
- Pavlo Kordiyaka — 6.71 meters
- Lucas Hatton — 6.1 meters
- Oleksii Novikov — 6.1 meters
- Tristain Hoath — 6.1 meters
- Maxime Boudreault — 5.49 meters
Event Four — Manhood Stones
The final event of day one at the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth competition was the Manhood Stones. In this event, the athletes got to choose between four stones of different weights. They then attempted to perform as many reps as possible with that stone. However, even one rep with a heavier stone trumped any number of reps with a lighter one.
The biggest shock of the entire competition took place on the Manhood Stones as the ‘King of the Stones’, Tom Stoltman, failed to get a repetition on the board. Specifically, Tom immediately picked up the heaviest 600-pound (272-kilogram) Stone, but was unable to get it off the ground. Many factors could have played into this, including fatigue from previous attempts, malfunctioning of the tacky, or something else. However, Tom walked away with no reps from an event that he expected to win.
The man who seized the opportunity was Hafthor Bjornsson, winning his third event on day one of the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth. Having won the Keg Toss as well, Hafthor had the benefit of going last on the Manhood Stones and knew exactly what he needed to do in order to get the win. In turn, he performed two reps with a 249-kilogram (649-pound) Stone and took max points once again.
Austin Andrade, Mitchell Hooper, and Trey Mitchell tied for second place in the event, with each athlete getting one rep at 249 kilograms (649 pounds). However, the time needed to complete the rep was used as a tiebreaker, with Andrade finishing in second and Hooper settling for third place.
- Hafthor Bjornsson — 2 reps at 249-kg
- Austin Andrade — 1 rep at 249-kg
- Mitchell Hooper — 1 rep at 249-kg
- Trey Mitchell — 1 rep at 249-kg
- Lucas Hatton — 1 rep at 227-kg
- Thomas Evans — 3 reps at 204-kg
- Evan Singleton — 1 rep at 204-kg
- Tristain Hoath — 1 rep at 204-kg
- Aivars Šmaukstelis — 1 rep at 204-kg
- Tom Stoltman — No Lift
- Bobby Thompson — No Lift
- Mathew Ragg — No Lift
- Wesley Derwinsky — No Lift
- Pavlo Kordiyaka — No Lift
- Maxime Boudreault — No Lift
- Oleksii Novikov — No Lift
Mitchell Hooper has now added the only prestigious title that was missing from his resume, having previously been crowned as the World’s Strongest Man, the Arnold Strongman Classic champion, and the Rogue Invitational winner. With this win, Hooper has now risen to become one of the strongest men in the world, boasting an unbelievable winning streak that makes him seem unbeatable.
