Anatolii Novopismennyi has been the king of the 105-kilogram weight class for some time now, but this year he faced his biggest challenge yet. Specifically, he competed against some unbelievable athletes at the 2024 IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships, which are taking place on June 15-23, in Druskininkai, Lithuania. Anatolii once again proved why he is one of the greatest powerlifters currently, having set new U105KG Raw Squat and Total IPF World Records.
Anatolii Novopismennyi’s campaign at the 2024 IPF World Championships started with a 350-kilogram (771.6-pound) squat, which indicated that he would easily sail to the win. However, the situation would get much more complicated in the next few attempts.
On his second attempt, Anatolii Novopismennyi chipped the World Record with a 363.5-kilogram (801.4-pound) squat. However, just minutes later, Ashton Rouska managed to squat 365.5 kilograms (805.8 pounds), breaking the record and putting Anatolii in a peculiar position.
Luckily for the Ukrainian athlete, he still had another attempt remaining, unlike Rouska, who finished all three of his. So, Anatolii decided to load 370.5 kilograms (816.8 pounds) on the bar in order to further advance the record and establish his dominance. The weight didn’t pose a challenge for Anatolii, as he managed to smoothly go through the movement.

Anatolii Novopismennyi had a great performance overall, missing just his final deadlift attempt. Unfortunately, that ended up costing him the title, as a very interesting, and a bit complicated turn of events happened.
Tiebreaker Rules
How was the winner decided?
Namely, Anatolii and Ashton Rouska both ended up with a Total of 940.5 kilograms (2,073.4 pounds). So, going by the rules, the winner was decided based on the bodyweight of the athletes. Ashton was 1.8 kilograms (4 pounds) lighter in this case, meaning that Anatolii had to settle for second place.
Who took the World Record?
On the other hand, although both men had the same Total, the World Record regulations are different from the tiebreaker ones. So, as the rules state, the World Record is given to the athlete who breaks it first.
Anatolii Novopismennyi achieved a 940.5-kilogram (2,073.4-pound) Total after his second deadlift attempt. Basically, he set the record, and Ashton just managed to equal it a few minutes later.

Although he didn’t manage to defend his title, Anatolii Novopismennyi has expanded his resume. He now has 21 sanctioned powerlifting appearances to his name and has secured a total of 13 victories in the process.
Moreover, Anatolii’s battle against Ashton Rouska was undoubtedly the tightest and most interesting one out of the entire competition. They first battled for the World Record on the squats, and then ended up Totaling the identical weight. With Anatolii taking the Record and Ashton taking the gold medal, neither one will go home empty handed.
