Patrick Vellner is one of the most experienced athletes on the men’s side of the professional CrossFit community. He is also arguably the greatest athlete that has never managed to get his hands on the CrossFit Games trophy. Well, as per his recent Instagram post, Vellner is ready to give his all once more for the 2026 season. So, Patrick plans to retire from the sport after making his final appearances at the 2026 CrossFit Games and 2026 Rogue Invitational.
Patrick Vellner has made it his goal to take part in as many major competitions as possible this year. So, apart from the CrossFit Games and the Rogue Invitational, he also wants to make appearances at the Wodapalooza and the World Fitness Project. With a final goal in sight, he will likely bring one of the best versions of himself, using that extra motivation to make one last impact on the sport.
“Well guys, this is it. The time has finally come. All good things must come to an end, and the 2026 season will be my final year of competition.
I’ve been extremely fortunate; I had a really long career, a pretty successful career, and it’s been full of great support. So, that is kind of why I wanted to get this out early. You have all been on this ride with me, and I wanted to let you know what I’ll be up to in my last season.
My plan for the 2026 season is to compete at as many events that have been pretty defining in my career as possible. Show up one last time for all the people who showed up for me over the years and finish the season with absolute certainty that I have nothing left to give. So, if all goes well this year, then I’ll be competing at Wodapalooza in Miami, competing in the WFP season, at the Rogue Invitational, and I’ll take one last crack at the CrossFit Games season.
I hope to leave that chapter of my life with a little better memory than the one that I currently have. That is it. This is the end of a pretty cool period of my life. It is a trip that I never thought I’d be on, and I want to thank you all for being on with me and all the support you have given me over the years…” said Patrick Vellner.

Patrick Vellner recently underwent a heart ablation procedure to deal with an issue that has been bothering him for quite a while now. It has limited his performance on certain occasions, as he got fatigued much more quickly than he usually would. However, seeing that the season was ongoing, Vellner could not afford to have any time off at the moment. So, he used the offseason prior to the 2026 season to complete the procedure, which should make his final season even more entertaining.
Patrick Vellner has an extensive sports background, having competed in gymnastics, lacrosse, and rugby from an early age. This helped him develop some core skills that carried over well to CrossFit. He also studied kinesiology at McGill University and chiropractic at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto, which equipped him with even more knowledge about optimizing physical performance.
Vellner has been competing in CrossFit since 2013 but qualified for the CrossFit Games two years later as a member of Team CrossFit Plateau. The very next year, Vellner qualified for the individual division of the 2016 CrossFit Games and was named ‘Rookie of the Year’ for his impressive third-place finish. He kept qualifying for every CrossFit Games onward, with the exception being the 2025 edition when he opted out of competing.
Interestingly, Patrick Vellner secured three silver medals and two bronze medals at the CrossFit Games, showing just how close he came to the title on multiple occasions. His consistency proves that he is one of the fittest men in history, but Patrick still wants to finally claim the top spot.
