Drinking
In the YouTube video, Cavaliere shared that abstaining from alcohol can bring most individuals one step closer to their weight loss goals.
“Drinking is one of those things that not a lot of us want to give up entirely. You may not have to. It depends on where you are, where you’re starting, and where your goal is.”
However, for those after shredded six-packs, he said drinking will hinder progress:
“If you want to get to that ultra-ripped condition, then this is not going to be okay,” he said. “If you’re doing it more than two times a week, guess what has to happen, if it’s more than two times a week, consumption levels have to go down.”
Caloric Deficit
Maintaining a caloric deficit is another key to losing weight and sporting a flatter stomach.
“In order to lose body fat, we have to create a caloric deficit,” he said. “If the answer is yes, [you’re in one], it’s not an instant congratulations. Are you doing it responsibly or doing it irresponsibly? There’s a big difference, guys. Irresponsible is crash diets, consuming an extremely low amount of calories.”
He warned against extreme approaches and crash diets, noting that they aren’t sustainable over time.
“Long term, that’s not going to work, and long term, it’s going to do more irreversible damage,” he shared. “If it’s responsible, meaning 200, 300, up to a 500-calorie deficit per day through your intake of food, I’d say that’s okay, and you’re doing the right thing in pursuit of a flatter stomach.”
Training
Though cardio can be an effective tool for burning calories, Cavaliere emphasized that weight training and building muscle create an easier climate for fat loss.
“Your cardio and conditioning. A lot of people will do this. They get a little less food, they are creating a caloric deficit, and they’re jumping on an elliptical trying to burn extra calories.
Why is that never the most successful way of doing this? Because you’re not building muscle doing that. Building muscle is going to be your absolute best friend when it comes to creating an easier job for your body to get to lower levels of body fat and, most importantly, maintaining it.”
Ab Training
Lastly, he pointed to ab training; even at higher body fat percentages, some people can see their top abs break through.
“I’m talking about the visual impact and the side effect that training these muscles will have on your overall outlook as you attempt to get closer to that goal of yours, whether it’s a flat stomach or incredibly ripped.”
“You can see the upper abs. You can start to see the upper obliques, but you’re not going to see anything if you haven’t taken the time to be dedicated to train those muscles. I want to see an increase in consistency here.”
