Arnold Schwarzenegger is in the public eye for almost half a century. From his bodybuilding days to his acting and political career, The Terminator has collected a vast amount of knowledge. Arnold’s wisdom about his craft as well as life as a phenomenon overall can help a lot of people. The recent issue of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s newsletter is out. The 74-year-old answered a fan’s question about how growing old has affected him physically and mentally.
The Terminator is well past the peak of his athletic and film career. However, he has not slowed down and approaches fitness with an equal amount of discipline and commitment. However, the idea of fitness cannot be the same for people at different stages of their lives.
“Physically, you just have to accept reality and do the best you can. It is always difficult to accept that you aren’t where you once were… More than 2,000,000 Americans over 65 suffer from depression.
I think a lot of that comes from hormonal changes that cause us to lose muscle over time. The global anti-aging market is worth 58 billion dollars. That is a lot of people trying to hold on to their youth.” Arnold Schwarzenegger stated.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s training routine
All forms of strength training help build and maintain muscle mass and contribute towards overall well-being. Remaining injury-free should rank up high in priorities while training in old age as recovering from injuries can be a long and arduous road. Maintaining proper form by using balance and stability is of utmost importance in free weight training to avoid injuries. Workout machines provide balance and stability to train specific muscles and reduce the chances of injuries significantly. Arnold Schwarzenegger transitioned to machines in 2012. He explained:
“I’ve chosen to adapt to my age, make my workouts a little bit different and focused on staying lean, and avoiding injury. This is why I’ve moved away from free weights and stick to the workout machines.”

Even at this stage of life, Arnold Schwarzenegger trains every day and starts his day with a workout session in the gym. While admitting that it is not as easy as it used to be in his youth, he says that taking efforts to maintain his health as best as he can, makes him happy.
“I’m addicted to training, and I have to start my day in the gym. So today, even though my body won’t react the way it did 50 years ago, I can maintain as much as I can and it brings me great joy.”
Impact of growing age on perspective towards life
The growing age has obviously made it a little difficult for Arnold Schwarzenegger to keep up with physical fitness and he has adopted wisely. However, with age, comes wisdom.
The 74-year-old is an active proponent of issues like a clean environment, political reforms, and general fitness. He believes that all those years of experience help him address these issues in a much more intelligent way than in his younger days.
“I feel much smarter than I was when I was younger, because I’ve read more, I’ve met more interesting people, I’ve become wiser, and of course, I’ve learned from my successes, and I’ve learned even more from my mistakes. Today, at 74, I’m fighting for a clean environment, I’m a fitness crusader, a good government reform campaigner, a businessman, and of course, an entertainer.
In my younger days, I couldn’t have talked healthcare policy or infrastructure in a really intelligent way, but now deep conversations about those topics bring me great joy. And I’ve learned life is about giving back, because in the end, we won’t be judged by how much we make, but by how much we give. It’s not just about me, it’s about we. In those ways, my life has only gotten more fulfilling.”
