Studies are actually getting more interesting, especially since it’s been shown to possibly enhance muscle-building through various pathways. 

However

Creatine is not necessary by any means and not everyone uses it, including athletes, bodybuilders, etc.

What Ingredients Are In a Pre-workout Without creatine?

There are many and we certainly would not be recommending pre-workouts if they didn’t work without creatine.

In other words, these pre-workouts offer a quality combination of effective ingredients. Of course, no two are exactly alike but you’ll see many of the most common pre-workout supplements ingredients/formulas across products. 

Ingredients in best pre-workouts without creatine 

Below we’ve briefly mentioned some of the common or not so common ingredients found in the products listed above. 

Caffeine

This one is obvious, but it is going to be the ingredient that gives you the biggest energy jolt. Caffeine is a nervous system stimulant and aside from drastically increasing energy, it enhances focus, alertness, and other factors that help to maximize physical and mental performance.

The products listed above vary in caffeine content but this is really a personal preference type of thing. For example, not everyone needs or wants 3-400 grams of caffeine per serving. 

Not everyone can handle this much caffeine and it can have undesirable effects for some people too. Then again, there are some people who are caffeine freaks and that’s fine too. 

But for those who want a lower dose, around 200mg and under can be just enough. 

You always want to make sure to read the label though to know how much caffeine is in a product, and you never want to take a lot of it or more than you’re used to without building up a tolerance. 

A “safe” depends on the person to an extent and typically, a dose of 400-600mg is recommended as the upper limit.  

L-citrulline

You will find this ingredient at the top of most pre-workout supplement labels, creatine or no-creatine. That’s because it may just be the most potent vasodilator on the market, which means it expands blood vessels to allow for better blood flow during training. 

Citrulline is used in many sexual health products and it can also be beneficial for heart health as well. 

It appeals to those chasing the “pump” in the gym but research has shown that citrulline can have performance benefits too. Not to mention, a study found it to increase growth hormone following exercise.

An effective dose of citrulline can range from 1-6+ grams per day and up to 10 grams have been used safely with no side effects. 

Beta-alanine

Another common ingredient in pre-workouts is beta-alanine. This is the culprit for causing the common tingling sensation after chugging down and pre-workout and waiting to smash the iron, trails, or whatever form of exercise you engage in. 

No worries though, this feeling is completely normal and nothing to worry about in most cases. 

But beta-alanine isn’t just there to make you feel tingly (that’d be weird wouldn’t it). It acts as a buffer against the painful lactic acid that builds up in your muscles during exercise and makes you want to tap out…

Many supplements use a form of beta-alanine called BetaPure that is supposed to be a more potent form of this ingredient. Therefore, lower doses are typically used. 

According to a study from 2015, 4-6g per day for 2-4 weeks has shown to improve exercise performance and reduce neuromuscular fatigue during physical activity (1).

In another more recent study, researchers gave 6.4/g beta-alanine/day or a placebo to thirty strength-trained volunteers over a span of 5 weeks (2).

Greater improvements in power output during maximal lifts and effort were seen in the beta-alanine group. 

Betaine 

Betaine is an ingredient that has been shown to increase muscle size and power. Therefore, it sort of stands in the place of creatine for this purpose. In fact, many of the supplement labels tell you this. 

In one study, subjects were prescribed 2.5g of betaine/day in combination with a 6-week resistance training periodization program (3).

The results were very promising… body composition, arm size, bench press volume, work capacity, and power all increased. It didn’t have much effect on strength though. This was also the case in a study of untrained women (4).

Creatine is a superior product for increasing strength and there really isn’t a natural supplement known to increase this factor of performance to the same degree. 

But betaine may apparently have some worthwhile performance and muscle-building benefits. Not to mention, there may be some limitations in research too.

Taurine 

Commonly used in energy drinks, taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid (needed in higher quantities during illness) found in the heart, muscles, eyes, and brain. 

The body makes it but it’s usually man-made and included in food products. 

It plays a role in nervous system function, hydration, digestion, nutrient regulation, and eye health and it has antioxidant properties. This means it can help to fight off disease-causing free radicals in the body. 

But where performance is concerned, Taurine may help to reduce exercise-induced fatigue and help you train longer. In addition, it could protect against muscle damage and oxidative stress and reduce muscle soreness after resistance training (5). 

In a study of well-trained cyclists, researchers found that 1.66g of taurine supplementation caused around 16% fat-loss (6). 

Doses of taurine up to 3,000mg have shown to be safe. Although, you never want to take too much of any ingredient (7).
