The 2020 CrossFit Games kicks off this weekend, in a new and unusual format. A few days before the start of the contest, the first six events have been revealed.

The format for this year’s CrossFit Games is certainly a unique one, as in-person competitions have been severely limited, due to the global pandemic. Therefore the folks at CrossFit HQ have put together a new format that will take place in two parts, an online qualifier and an in-person final with the top 5 male and female competitors. The finals will take place next month in Aromas, California, but the qualifiers begin this weekend, with 60 total athletes from around the world participating in their own homes or affiliates.

With Stage One of the 2020 CrossFit Games coming up, athletes and fans have been wondering what workouts they could expect. The weekend will see four Blocks of events, with each Block being made up for 2 workouts, except for Block Four. The CrossFit Games Instagram page revealed what the first two events would be, and shortly after, the next four were also revealed. The events are made up as follows:

Block One (Friday, 9am-12pm local time)

Friendly Fran (3 Rounds, No Time Cap)

  • 21 Thrusters
  • 21 Chest-to-Bar Pull-Ups

Men: 115lb | Women: 85lb

Scored based on completion time.

1-Rep Max Front Squat

  • Athletes declare their start time, and will have 20 minutes to complete, from that point.
  • In that 20 minutes, athletes may do as many front squats as they want in order to find their 1RM.
  • Scored based on the load of their heaviest successful weight.
  • In the event of a tie, the lighter athlete will get the win.

Block Two (Friday, 3pm-6pm local time)

Damn Diane (3 Rounds, No Time Cap)

  • 15 deadlifts
  • 15 strict deficit handstand push-ups

Men: 315lb, 3.5in deficit | Women: 205lb, 2in deficit

1,000 Meter Row (No Time Cap)

  • Row 1,000m

Block Three (Saturday, 9am-12pm local time)

Nasty Nancy (5 Rounds, No Time Cap)

  • 500m Run
  • 15 Overhead Squats
  • 15 Bar-Facing Burpees

Men: 185lb Women: 125lb

Handstand Hold

  • Freestanding Handstand Hold For Max Time

Block Four (Saturday, 12pm-3pm local time)

Awful Annie (Alternating Workouts For Reps)

  • Double-Unders w/ Drag Rope (50-40-30-20-10 reps)
  • GHD Sit-Ups (50-40-30-20-10 reps)
  • Cleans (5-4-3-2-1 reps)

Men: 275lb | Women: 185lb

Affiliates are encouraged to participate in the 2020 CrossFit Games by continuing to have WODs during the contest. As previously announced, the Leaderboards will be updated throughout the weekend, so fans can check the progress of the Games as they unfold. Then there will be videos posted of athlete’s workouts as they take place. For more details on how to watch the event, check here.
