The 2023 IPF World Bench Press Championships took place from May 20-28, in Sun City, South Africa. So, during the multi-day competition, many athletes got the chance to display their strength to the world. The most notable performance came from Daiki Kodama who broke a Bench Press World Record which has stood for over three decades. The Japanese representative, Daiki, managed to lock out a bench press of 230.5 kilograms (508.2 pounds) for new World Records in both the Open and Masters 1 (40-49 Years Old) age divisions.

Although Daiki Kodama took part in both the Raw and Equipped (Single Ply) divisions, his World Record was set in only the Raw division. So, he was only allowed to use a pair of wrist wraps and a lifting belt. In addition, this was all Daiki needed to crush a 230.5-kilogram (508.2-pound) bench press.

Since Daiki Kodama is 44-years-old, he was eligible to compete in the Masters 1 age division, where he absolutely demolished the old record. However, he also set a World Record in the Open age division which accounts for all athletes regardless of age.

Note: The competition consisted of only one event – the bench press.

Although every World Record is an amazing achievement, Daiki Kodama’s bench press stands out due to the fact that the previous record in the Open age division stood for 33 years. It was set by Rüdiger Riehm at the 1990 IPF World Bench Press Championships with a lift of 220 kilograms (485 pounds). The fact that it remained untouched for such a long time is a testament to its impressive nature. Daiki’s new World Record will probably remain unbeaten for a long time as well, unless he surpasses it himself in the future.

In addition, the record which Daiki Kodama broke in the Master 1 age class was also 27-years-old. That record was set by Bernd Vogel, who pressed 215 kilograms (474 pounds) at the 1996 IPF World Disabled Bench Press Championships. Bernd was exactly 40-years-old when he set the record.

Interestingly, Daiki Kodama usually competes in the 74-kilogram weight class, but he decided to move up to the 83-kilogram weight class for his most recent appearance. As a matter of fact, Daiki also holds the Open and Masters 1 Raw Bench Press World Records in the 74-kilogram weight class.

Daiki Kodama has taken part in over 70 sanctioned competitions during his 22-year-long career. The majority of these appearances were in bench-only competitions. So, it is no surprise that Daiki won almost all of them.
