Flex Wheeler was one of the best bodybuilders of his era. Like many others, he is not very impressed with the current generation of competitors.
Wheeler has been a mainstay in the world of Bodybuilding for the better of 30 years. In his career, he was a winner of the Arnold Classic, as well as a multiple-time runner up at the Olympia. As a result, he is very respected in the community.
This respected opinion of Wheeler was on display recently, during an interview with Valuetainment. Patrick Bet-David has been asking some bodybuilding legends to compare today’s crop of athletes to their own generation. This continued with Flex, who was asked the same question. However, when shown pictures of six of today’s bodybuilders, his response was critical but respectful.
This is what Wheeler said:
“I competed with two of them,” Flex Wheeler said. “Dexter (Jackson) was the first to win the Olympia. When we competed on the same stage, I think I was first, and he was like tenth. So it was just different.
“It’s just kind of different,” Wheeler continued. “I don’t mean any disrespect to these gentlemen. I know all of them, and I consider myself to be very cordial with all of them. It’s not personal, and I can’t laugh about it, because it’s not funny because you’re talking about men who are working very hard. But no, it’s different, and I think if you were to ask any of those men they would say the same.”

When asked about the way other people handled the same questions, Wheeler explained that he wanted to handle it differently. He said there is no reason to be rude to these men. Moreover, he said they deserve respect.
“These men are champions,” Wheeler said. “It’s just a different era, and it’s not fair to compare them, because we are not in that era.”

Wheeler concluded by paying respect to Brandon Curry and Dexter Jackson because they accomplished what he did not. He explained that regardless of the differences, those two won the Olympia whole he could not. Therefore, they deserve nothing but respect.
