Hafthor Bjornsson recently came out with some very exciting news that hardly anyone expected. It came during his recent deadlift session, which he filmed and posted on YouTube. While working out, Hafthor revealed that he has plans to break his own Deadlift World Record in an official competition. Moreover, Hafthor has confirmed that he will take part in the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth and 2024 Iceland’s Strongest Man competitions
Hafthor Bjornsson expressed a lot of optimism about his World Record Deadlift attempt, as he is already feeling quite strong. So, he plans to make an attempt later this year in an undisclosed competition. Hafthor did point out that the competition won’t be taking place in Iceland, presumably to avoid any speculation of bias towards him.
Moreover, Hafthor Bjornsson is aiming to deadlift 505 kilograms (1,113.3 pounds), a milestone that many Strongmen have attempted over the past few years and failed. However, Bjornsson stated “at least” 505 kilograms (1,113.3 pounds), meaning that he might set the bar even higher than that.
“I’m planning on a massive deadlift this year… I plan on pulling at least 505-kg (1,113.3-lb) or more, we’ll see… My plan is to do it just to shut up the haters. So, many negative people out there. I want to do it in a competition, not in Iceland, somewhere else. My plan is to do it and finish the whole competition. No athlete has ever done that before, broken the record, and then competed in the rest of the show.”

Hafthor Bjornsson’s current Deadlift World Record stands at 501 kilograms (1,104.5 pounds). However, when it happened, it divided the strength community into two parts. Namely, Hafthor performed the lift inside his own gym, which made a lot of people skeptical, even though Magnus Ver Magnussen was present in the room as a judge.

So, after years of people looking down on his achievement, Hafthor Bjornsson has decided to shut down his haters by pulling even more weight, and this time in an official competition. Not only that, but he plans to perform other events that the competition has in store, which will make his preparation process even more difficult.
In the same video, Hafthor Bjornsson also announced his participation in two more Strongman competitions this year. One will be 2024 Iceland’s Strongest Man, a competition that Hafthor has won ten times in his career already.
The other competition is the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth, which is one of the greatest International meets of the year. Hafthor was tempted to join after seeing the events a few months ago, but has now officially confirmed his participation. He has also earlier confirmed that he will take part in the 2024 Rogue Invitational later this year.
So, Hafthor Bjornsson’s first year back in Strongman is proving to be quite an active one, resembling his time in the sport prior to retiring. So, with his two recent appearances at the 2024 Arnold Strongman Classic in Ohio and in the UK, Hafthor has taken part in a total of 75 International and National competitions. He has also managed to win 38 of those.
A year has passed since Hafthor Bjornsson’s gruesome pec tear on the bench press, but he is already back to insane strength levels. He proved that he can compete against the best Strongmen in the world, but he still needs a bit more to reach his full potential.
Apart from working on his deadlift, in order to break the World Record, Hafthor Bjornsson has also pointed out that he needs to improve his overhead pressing strength. The main reason for this is that the 2024 Strongest Man On Earth features two overhead events, which could cost him massive points. So, it will be an interesting few months for Hafthor.
