Patrick Vellner, a multi-time Rogue Invitational champion and former CrossFit Games runner-up, recently competed at the 2026 WFP Grand Park Pro in Westfield, Indiana. The contest ran from August 28-30, but things took a tough turn when Vellner suffered a serious injury on the floor. Following the accident, he decided to officially call it a career and retire from competitive CrossFit.

During one of the events, Patrick Vellner suddenly went down and an implement fell right on his foot. While it looked like the heavy piece of gear caused the damage, later reports suggested that his injury happened a split second before the drop. The sudden collapse was reportedly caused by a ruptured Achilles tendon, which made him lose his footing and bring the implement down with him.

Despite the injury, Patrick Vellner wasn’t ready to leave the sport on a stretcher. He actually came back out the next day wearing a plastic boot to immobilize his leg just so he could perform the bench press event. In an emotional post-event interview where he clearly struggled to hold back tears, he explained his choice to retire:

“It’s disappointing, obviously. I hesitate to say it even. I’ve been very fortunate in my career and I think that’s what I’ve been trying to anchor myself on. It’s like, I’ve been dodging bullets for a decade, and I got clipped yesterday and that happens, and it could have happened five years ago and it would have been worse.

So, it’s annoying to decide where the finish line is and then fall just short of it. But, ultimately, I’ve had lots of good opportunities and I was already done. It never is fun to get hurt…

I had the chance to come out, and I trained for the bench anyways. I could do it and I was like I can come out and maybe try to finish my career with a PR on my bench instead of getting carried off the floor. So that is what I did.”

Patrick Vellner is now looking at eight months of rehab. However, he won’t rush his recovery, as he is now retired from the sport and wants to be as healthy as possible for everything that lies ahead of him, including spending time doing things with his family and others he loves.

Before his unexpected injury, Patrick Vellner had actually planned to make 2026 his final year in competitive fitness on his own terms. He set out to do a full farewell tour across the biggest events that shaped his career, aiming to officially call it quits after competing at the 2026 CrossFit Games and the Rogue Invitational. He had even undergone a heart procedure in the off-season just to make sure he was in top shape for one last full run, making the abrupt finish to his season all the more heartbreaking.

Patrick Vellner leaves behind one of the most stacked resumes in CrossFit history. Over his career, he competed in ten individual CrossFit Games, standing on the podium five times with three silver and two bronze medals to his name. He was just as dominant across other premier events, racking up four medals at the Rogue Invitational, including two titles and two silver finishes, alongside three individual Wodapalooza titles. Add in a victory at the 2020 CrossFit Open and his long list of accolades goes well beyond what fits on paper.
