A seemingly healthy 22-year-old woman dropped dead at the gym while performing barbell squats. During her stay at a local gym earlier this month, Ariatna Lizeth Mata Esparza, from Torreón, Mexico, met her untimely fate, leaving many to wonder how this catastrophe happened. At the time of this writing, we do not know how much weight she was lifting.

According to local officials on August 22, 2024, Esparza suddenly collapsed to the floor during her strenuous workout. Although paramedics were quick and rushed to the scene, she was pronounced dead shortly after they arrived. Some information has come forth on her mysterious passing.

A spokesperson who represents the Attorney General’s Office shared autopsy details, revealing that the deceased suffered from a condition called anoxemia which occurs when there is too little oxygen in the blood. Upon these findings, some have suggested that her death could have been caused by over-exertion. In addition, it was discovered that Esparza suffered from a stroke and blood clots. Some have suggested, including doctors, that Mexico’s high altitude could have contributed to the incident (Mexico is 3,600 feet above sea level).

Anoxemia can lead to blood clots, which could be the primary culprit responsible for her passing. Escuela Normal was an education community attended by Esparza, who was a school teacher; they were quick to offer their thoughts and condolences on the tragedy.

“With profound sadness, the educational community at the Escuela Normal de Torreon mourns the regrettable death of our dear ex-student.”

“My princes, my girl, you’ve gone and left us with empty souls and shattered hearts. Fly high, my love. I love you, my princess,” they shared.

Doctors have insisted that working out at high altitude could cause complications such as what happened to Esparza. Since more oxygen is utilized by the body during exercise, it causes levels in the body to decrease, which could result in cell death. Moreover, the sudden rise in blood pressure could cause blood vessels to burst, ultimately leading to brain hemorrhages. However, people who normally work out at higher altitudes are less susceptible to such disastrous outcomes.

There have been several deaths shaking the fitness and bodybuilding community as of late. Brazilian Bodybuilder Antonio Souza suffered from a heart attack on the night of winning a bodybuilding contest. He was only 26 years old; his family believed diuretics could have played a role in his death.

There have also been high-profile deaths rock the industry, such as Jo Lindner passing away at only 30 years old. While preliminary reports suggest an aneurysm caused his death, others have speculated that the Covid-19 vaccine treatment or steroids could have been the true cause.

This isn’t the first death-by-squat accident to rear its head. A man from Indonesia, bodybuilder Justyn Vicky, died after attempting to squat 396.8 pounds. He ended up snapping his neck as the barbell rolled across his shoulders and moved over his head. While he had a spotter behind him, it ended up not mattering.
