The 2024 CrossFit Games took place on August 8-11 and saw James Sprague take the title in the men’s division. He competed against dozens of other athletes over the course of four days and ultimately ended up accumulating the highest number of points. Sprague’s title charge was quite impressive, as he had to pull off an incredible comeback to achieve it.

James Sprague has been doing CrossFit for over eight years, but he spent half of his career competing in the younger age classes. However, freshly in his 20s, Sprague has already managed to become the 2024 CrossFit Games champion. It is important to note that last year’s CrossFit Games champion, Jeffrey Adler, withdrew from the competition following the death of Lazar Đukić. However, that does not take away from how impressive Sprague’s victory was.

James Sprague’s Full Performance

  • Lake Day: Seventh-Place
  • Midline Climb: Seventh-Place
  • Firestorm: Fourth-Place
  • Track and Field: Fourth-Place
  • Chad: First-Place
  • Clean Ladder: 21st-Place
  • Push Pull 2.0: 17th-Place
  • Dickies Triplet: Second-Place
  • 2241: Fifth-Place
  • 1815: Fourth-Place

James Sprague finished the competition with a total of 806 points, which was 21 points more than the second-place finisher had.

James Sprague’s path to victory was quite an unusual one. He had a great start to the competition and ended up leading the men’s division after day two. He then won the first event on the third day of the competition, and everything seemed to be going well for him. However, he then had two low-placing events, finishing 21st and 17th in back-to-back events. Due to this, Sprague ended up losing his lead.

Instead, Brent Fikowski was the one who started the final day of the 2024 CrossFit Games wearing the leader’s jersey. Not only that, but James Sprague was also on a huge deficit, finding himself 45 points behind Fikowski.

Although it seemed like an impossible task, James Sprague managed to finish in 2nd, 5th, and 4th place across the final three events of the competition. Moreover, Brent Fikowski had his worst performance of the entire competition in the final event, allowing Sprague to overtake him. In turn, James Spreague became the 2024 Fittest Man on Earth.

James Sprague has been reaching the CrossFit Semifinal throughout each of the last four seasons, but this was only his second year at the CrossFit Games. He made his debut in 2023, where he finished in 25th place. Well, he has clearly made tremendous progress in just one year, managing to climb up to first place at the 2024 CrossFit Games. He was certainly an underdog in the competition, but his greatness will be recognized moving forward.

It is not clear what the next step is for James Sprague, but it is clear that he is currently in the best shape of his life. Winning the 2024 CrossFit Games has been done by just a handful of men, and he is now officially one of them. Being so young, James could chase another CrossFit Games title in order to join the ranks of Mat Fraser, Rich Froning, and Justin Medeiros.
