Mike Sommerfeld is back in the middle of a major Classic Physique debate after a dramatic few weeks on the bodybuilding calendar. The German standout rebounded from a costly setback at the 2026 Arnold Classic Ohio, where he missed the division’s weight cap, to defeat Wesley Vissers and capture the 2026 Arnold Classic UK title in Birmingham.
That win should have ended the conversation around his place in the division, at least for the moment. Instead, it reignited one of Classic Physique’s longest-running arguments: how much muscularity is too much for a category built on flow, symmetry, and old-school aesthetics?
Sommerfeld has become one of the clearest examples of where that line gets blurry. He brings elite conditioning, a standout back, dense muscle maturity, and a complete stage package. But for some longtime bodybuilding voices, that same completeness has started to make him look less like a Classic Physique athlete and more like someone who belongs in another division.
Lee Priest Questions Sommerfeld’s Fit in Classic Physique
Lee Priest made that case directly during a recent IFBB AMA video, where he questioned whether Sommerfeld still matches the spirit of the category. The discussion also touched on Wesley Vissers, who won the 2026 Arnold Classic Ohio Classic Physique title but finished second to Sommerfeld at the Arnold Classic UK.
“When I look at Mike, I don’t really see classic. I see like bodybuilder, even like a 212 bodybuilder.”
“Whereas Wesley, I guess, just being taller, flows, more like classic lines than Mike.”
“Mike just looks like a shorter stocky bodybuilder, not classic to me.”
“I’d actually like to see Mike go into the 212 and bodybuilding and out of the classic… he just looks like a bodybuilder in a classic class.”
The comparison gets at the heart of the debate surrounding today’s Classic Physique division. In Priest’s view, Sommerfeld’s dense, compact build reads more like a bodybuilder’s physique, while Wesley Vissers’ taller structure and smoother flow align more closely with the classic look many fans still prefer.
Who Is Mike Sommerfeld?
For fans who are newer to the division, Sommerfeld’s rise has been years in the making. Mike Sommerfeld earned his IFBB Pro card in 2019 and initially tested himself in the 212 division before finding his stride in Classic Physique.
His résumé has steadily grown ever since. Sommerfeld won the 2021 Xtreme Bodybuilding & Fitness Pro and 2021 Poland Supershow Pro, then collected Olympia placings of seventh in 2021, fifth in 2022, and eighth in 2023. He broke through in a big way with a runner-up finish at the 2024 Classic Physique Olympia, confirming that he belonged among the best in the world.
In 2025, he added another major milestone by winning the Arnold Classic Physique title in Columbus. That victory elevated him from dangerous contender to one of the division’s central figures.
Arnold Ohio Setback, Arnold UK Redemption
This season has only added to his intrigue. Sommerfeld’s failed weight cut in Ohio turned into one of the weekend’s biggest headlines and raised immediate questions about whether his body is outgrowing the division. Instead of defending his title there, he had to reset quickly and prepare for a second chance in the UK.
He answered that setback with one of the strongest responses possible. By making weight and winning in Birmingham, Sommerfeld showed he can still succeed under the current rules, even as critics continue to debate whether his physique still embodies the “classic” ideal.
