The wins keep stacking up for bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger. On March 29, 2026, “The Austrian Oak” received an honorary doctorate from the Ulster University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He earned this recognition thanks to his environmental contributions and his work as the Governor of California.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has worn many hats. He first set his sights on bodybuilding and conquered the world’s toughest stages throughout the 1970s. From there, he leveraged that fame into a highly successful acting career, appearing in blockbuster films like The Terminator franchise and Predator.
Later in life, Schwarzenegger switched gears. He won the race for the Governor of California and held on to the position for eight years. To this day, his efforts beyond the stage haven’t gone unnoticed. Best of all, he can now call himself Dr. Schwarzenegger.
Arnold Schwarzenegger Shares Heartfelt Speech After Receiving Honorary Doctorate in Northern Ireland
In the video, Schwarzenegger thanked the Ulster University for the honor.
“I was told to come up here and to only speak for two minutes. I mean, imagine? How do you keep the two minutes? Do I go and look at my watch the whole time when I talk? Second of all, let’s be honest, it’s very hard to be Schwarzenegger and only talk for two minutes.”
“The bottom line is that I just want to say thank you very much to the Ulster University, to the chancellor, and the vice chancellor for inviting me here and for this honorary degree. This whole thing began in a very odd way because they FaceTimed me several months ago.”
Schwarzenegger reflected on his bodybuilding career and shared how Reg Park inspired him throughout the years:
“To me, this is very meaningful because the chancellor said that 60 years ago, I came to Belfast the first time. 60 years ago… think about that. I know the majority of people were not alive then, but I’m just trying to tell you this is really an anniversary for me, 60 years later to come back here.”
“Yes, I was here as a bodybuilding champion. There was this new upcoming champion that was traveling around and doing posing exhibitions, and flexing my muscles, and all this stuff. But after my posing was over, my idol, Reg Park, and became Mr. Universe three times and got into the movies, did Hercules movies; he was like my idol. He was god for me,” he said.
Even with a busy schedule at 78, Schwarzenegger’s passion for bodybuilding keeps him young. He recently hosted the 2026 Arnold Classic Ohio and UK events. The winner, Chinedu Andrew ‘Jacked’ Obiekea, made history, securing $1 million in prize earnings in a single month.
Schwarzenegger continues to prove age is just a number. He hasn’t forgotten his bodybuilding roots, which helped forge his legacy on and off the stage.
