Where the clues come from
Every clue is drawn from the athlete's recorded competition results: the division they competed in, the years they were active, the country they represented, and their placings.
Nothing is written specially for the puzzle, so a clue is only ever as good as the record behind it.
Where a detail is missing from the database it is left out of the puzzle rather than guessed at, which is why some days offer fewer clues than others.
