The anticipation is over. Jay Cutler and Sam Sulek met on December 7, 2024, for an instinctive chest workout and posing session. During the visit, Sulek received valuable bodybuilding tips from the four-time Mr. Olympia as he sets his sights on competing in the Classic Physique division.
At 22 years old, Sam Sulek has become more popular than just about every bodybuilder outside of Chris Bumstead and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Although he’s yet to test himself on a bodybuilding stage, that could all change soon. Sulek revealed plans to compete in the Classic Physique category in one to one-and-a-half years.
Having pumped iron alongside other big names in the sport such as reigning Mr. Olympia Samson Dauda and Urs Kalecinski, Sulek continues to absorb valuable information ahead of his big splash in the IFBB Pro League. Cutler, who led one of the most successful bodybuilding careers of anyone, wasn’t short on insights for the aspiring Pro.

Chest press machine
With the contraction being the number one priority, Cutler explained to Sulek how he approached the chest press machine at the start of their workout. He prefers a lower seat and positions his hands on the middle of the handle.
“I just keep the seat really low on these,” said Cutler. “I’ll do two sets like this and then I’ll go into the working sets, at least three working sets. This is more of a feel set. Just getting the blood in there.”
“I hate the term warmup because it’s 150 degrees in Vegas, I’m warm right?” says Cutler.
Sulek doesn’t utilize feeler sets like Cutler, rather, he uses his warmup to determine how much weight he should start with.
“If I already warmed up with the cables, I might do like three and say okay, I can handle two plates, everything feels good, let’s move on,” replied Sulek.
“See how you’re going wider? I’m basically in the middle of that handle,” adds Cutler. “That’s like Dorian Yates-shit, bro [doing four plates].”
Cable crossovers
Cutler shared that he likes to alternate between chest movements that focus on pump first and then the stretch for optimal results.
“What I always talked about, not to say I followed this to the extreme, pump, stretch, pump, stretch, that’s kind of how I guide it.
So if I do some sort of fly, open up more tissue, more blood flow since I already got some blood in there, stretch those fibers, get some more, then pump.”
Incline chest press machine
Before moving to the incline chest press machine, Sulek and Cutler discussed if they like being yelled at while pushing through sets. Moments later, Sulek pounded out some partial reps under Cutler’s guidance.
“You like getting yelled at?” asks Sulek.
“No, because I never trained with a partner,” says Cutler.
“When I worked out with Urs, [he yelled], Urs is yelling and I’m sitting there watching. And guys are like, ‘Sam, what the, Urs is yelling at you during a set and you’re not saying anything.’ I think subconsciously I almost want the set to speak for itself.”
“You’re yelling at yourself inside,” says Cutler.
Standing pec fly machine
Jay Cutler and Sulek opened up on whether they ever skipped training sessions when things didn’t feel right.
“What I’ve learned about Sam today more than anything, is that it’s very instinctive. He’s taking it by whatever roles, every day is going to be different. You may think you’re going to go in and feel a certain way or feel a movement, I can’t tell you how many times I drove to the gym, training for Olympia, ‘This isn’t the day.’ I turned around and left. Do you ever have those days?” asks Jay Cutler.
“It’s rare. I think I’m setting myself up for success in a way. Even the days where I feel like shit, I re-route it and I’m like okay, that’s good that it’s hard. It’s good I didn’t sleep last night. Totally stupid but there’s this certain value in having the ability to do that,” shared Sulek.
Sulek is determined to master all aspects of bodybuilding. In addition to his training efforts, the young star has focused on his diet lately, incorporating a cleaner selection of foods to fuel his physique and workouts. He recently walked fans through his 2,477-calorie full day of eating for weight loss and revealed he was tipping the scales at 241.5 pounds.
Emerging from different bodybuilding eras, fans have long waited for this collaboration and it didn’t disappoint. With Sulek taking knowledge away from the workout with Cutler, fans look forward to seeing him grace a bodybuilding stage soon!
