Marathon splits for your finish time

Type your goal time to get your clock time at each 5K and at halfway. We mark your time in the chart above, as a row of its own if it falls between two rows, and it prints with the chart.

Example: a 4:00:00 marathon

9:09per mile, 5:41 per km

At an even pace you pass 30K in 2:50:38 and finish in 4:00:00.

Even pace: finish time divided by 42.195 km. We round each time to the nearest second.

How the marathon paces are worked out

We worked out every row as if you hold one steady speed from start to finish. Your pace per kilometer is your finish time divided by 42.195, the marathon distance in the World Athletics rules. For pace per mile we divide by 26.2188 miles, because a mile is 1.609344 km by definition.

We round each pace and split to the nearest second. Multiply a rounded pace back out over 42.195 km and you can land up to 21 seconds away from the finish time in its row.

To finish under a time, run one second per mile (or per kilometer) faster than its row. The 3:00 row lists 6:52, and 6:52 per mile held for 26.2188 miles takes 3:00:02; 6:51 per mile takes 2:59:36.

Using the marathon chart on race day

Check your pace at the course's markers, not against the distance on your watch. Where the race marks miles, press lap at each marker and hold each lap to the per-mile column. Where it marks kilometers, compare your clock time at each 5K with the splits for your goal time. Enter your goal before you print and the printout lists them.

Your splits count from the moment you cross the start line. If the course clocks show time since the gun, subtract the time you took to reach the start line before you compare.

Each 5 seconds per mile you run slower than your row adds 2:11 to your finish. The chart assumes one pace from start to finish; plan a slower start and your early splits will sit behind the chart's.

Marathon pace chart questions

Why did my watch say I ran more than 26.2 miles?

Course measurers follow the shortest line a runner could take, so any wider line adds distance. World Athletics also recommends laying out courses 0.1% long, about 42 m over a marathon, so a course does not come up short when someone measures it again.

Does the chart allow for hills or heat?

No. It shows even pace over the measured distance. Hills, heat and a crowded start all change how fast you can run, and the chart adjusts for none of them.
