Where the pace chart numbers come from
The pace charts divide each finish time by the race distance, and use NIST's exact mile for the per-mile column. World Athletics lists the 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon as standard road distances and sets the marathon at 42.195 km; the half marathon is half of that, 21.0975 km. Each chart page names these sources. We last verified the charts against them on .
- World Athletics Technical Rules (Book C, C2.1)In force from 1 July 2026. Part VII Road Races sets the standard distances, including the marathon at 42.195 km.
- NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.82008 edition. 1 mile = 1.609344 km, an exact factor.
Running calculator questions
Should I use a pace chart or the pace calculator?
Use a chart to compare common finish times for one race on a page you can print. Use the pace calculator for any other distance or time.
Are the chart paces exact?
They are exact for an even pace over the official distance, rounded to the nearest second. Hills, heat and a wide line around the course all change your time, and the charts allow for none of them.
