Francisco “Paco” Bautista (nickname “El Toro”) was born on March 12, 1971 in his native Barcelona, Spain. He gravitated towards bodybuilding early in life and went on to become a successful professional bodybuilder.

He started competing in the European regional scene and became a highly touted prospect. Bautista won the 1999 European Amateur Championships and also claimed the World Amateur Championships in the heavyweight division that same year.

He also left a mark in the 2002 Grand Prix in the years that followed. ‘Paco’ Bautista made his bodybuilding debut in the USA with a third-place finish at the 2002 IFBB Night of Champions. His incredibly muscular physique and enviable lower body immediately became the talk of the town and Bautista became an instant sensation in the USA.

He competed in several high-profile bodybuilding competitions throughout his career, winning two pro shows – the 2006 and 2007 Santa Susanna Pro. Bautista also showed his talent on the Mr. Olympia stage.

His first Olympia appearance came in 2002 where the Spanish bodybuilder finished 20th. He competed at Mr. Olympia three more times – in 2006, 2007, and 2007. Bautista retired from competitive bodybuilding after a 13th-place finish at the 2013 Arnold Classic Brasil.

Francisco Bautista Workout

At the peak of his career, Francisco Bautista followed a five-day training week. He dedicated a training session each for the chest, back, shoulders, arms, and legs. The Spaniard clubbed abs exercises with one of the five weekly workouts.

His training included isolation and compound exercises using free weights as well as machines. Bautista changed the training routine based on his immediate and long-term goals while making sure that he balanced the workouts to pay equal attention to all the muscle groups for complete development.

The retired bodybuilder tried to take most of his sets to failure for muscle and strength gain. He also employed techniques like supersets and drop sets to increase the training intensity and push beyond failure.

  • Superset – Bench Press with Dumbell Fly – 4 sets of 10 reps to failure

Francisco Bautista Diet

Francisco Bautista followed a typical bodybuilder’s diet during his active bodybuilding days. He ensured adequate protein intake in each of his six daily meals and consumed moderate to low carbohydrates and fats.

Bautista reduced the caloric intake the closer he got to the competition date and also restricted the carbohydrate intake to get cut for the shows. While he indulged in his favorite foods once in a while, the instances were rare as he stayed committed to a bodybuilding diet without compromise.

The Spanish bodybuilder got most of his protein through lean sources like chicken breast, lean cuts of beef, fish, eggs, and whey protein powder. Meanwhile, oats, sweet potatoes, and other foods like these served as a good source of complex carbohydrates in his diet.
