Given everything that is going on in the world right now, fans were unsure what to expect from the 2020 CrossFit Games. Now it seems that athletes can look forward to a unique and different set up from any other previous year.

The last couple of months have been crazy in the CrossFit community. Not only have they been dealing with the same difficulties that the rest of the world is dealing with, regarding the global health crisis, but there has also been some serious turnover in leadership. Eric Roza purchased the company from Greg Glassman, following a ton of controversial remarks made by the former CEO and Owner, leading to something of a standoff between he and sponsors, as well as the sport’s top athletes.

Throughout all of this, the sentiment was that, no matter what, the 2020 CrossFit Games was going to continue. Although the event was moved from it’s normal location, and severely reduced, there was a ton of excitement around the idea of this year’s Games. However there were still a lot of things that still needed to be worked out, in terms of how the event will go down.

Now it seems like CrossFit HQ has determined a plan for the 2020 CrossFit Games, and it is rather unique. Apparently they will be having the event in a hybrid environment, with the majority of the contest taking place online. Then, the top 5 men and women from these online competitions will go head-to-head, for an in-person contest in California, to determine the Fittest Man and Woman on Earth.

“The 2020 Reebok CrossFit Games are a go!,” said CrossFit CEO Eric Roza. “At CrossFit, we are always energized by a challenge, and hosting a worldwide sporting event in the age of COVID is no exception. We are excited to be able to deliver the CrossFit Games to our athletes, fans, and CrossFit gym members in 158 countries through a two-stage format that combines a worldwide online competition with a small in-person finals in Northern California. This innovative format will help us protect the safety of our athletes while delivering a world-class Games experience to identify the world’s fittest individuals.”

According to the report, the online portion of the contest will take place sometime in September, with a date still to be determined. Then, around 4-5 weeks after that, the final 5 will compete to determine the winners. All events will be streamed on the CrossFit website, and each athlete will be judged in person.

What do you think of this new setup for the 2020 CrossFit Games?
