Bikini bodybuilder Luz Maria Barrera Agaton tragically passed away on Sunday after her body was discovered floating in a pool at a hotel in Mexico. The news was reported by multiple outlets on June 5, 2025.

Agaton was enjoying her time at the Coco Resort & Villas Hotel in Motul, near Cancun, with her boyfriend and some relatives. She was left alone at the pool. When medical personnel responded to the scene, they attempted to render aid but were unsuccessful. Police are currently investigating the incident and have yet to rule out foul play.

Just two weeks ago, there were reportedly threatening messages written on banners outside of her gym in Merida. It’s uncertain if the signs had anything to do with her death; even so, it has raised eyebrows.

Agaton was an avid fitness enthusiast. In addition to sharing her workout endeavors and progress online, she was committed to improving as a bodybuilder.

She managed to find success as an amateur Bikini bodybuilder. She had a huge moment early in her career when she placed fourth at the 2017 Amateur Olympia. She used that momentum to thrive under the bright lights, leading her to secure gold at the Mister Mexico contest that same season. Then, she competed at the Mexico Supershow Pro Qualifier.

Though in 2024, she proved herself as one of the best Bikini amateurs in the world. Agaton won last year’s Amateur Olympia contest and proceeded to dominate, earning the title of Queen of the Motul Carnival. But she was more than just a bodybuilder, she was also a prolific gym owner. She was beloved in the community, having opened the Golden Gyms on top of being a member of the Yucatan State Bodybuilding & Fitness Association. She also sponsored bodybuilding contests.

The loss has sent ripples through the bodybuilding community, with the President of the AFFEY, Evangelina Cime Mezquita, issuing a statement on the devastating loss:

ā€œShe was a woman who brought the name of Yucatan to the international stage. She was an organizer, sponsor, businesswoman, friend, and above all, a very humane woman. Those of us who had the good fortune to know her loved her very much.ā€ she said.

Sadly, this hasn’t been the first notable influencer to die, leaving her followers in disarray. Katie Donnell was hailed as the ‘Workout Queen,’ and died of a recent heart attack at 28 years old. She was known to consume an excessive amount of caffeine, which included caffeine pills, energy drinks, and coffee throughout the day.

The death of bodybuilder Grishall Disner also caught the world’s attention. He was only 23 years old. During his stay at a bar, he was shot twice. Some believe he shot himself. However, others believe that’s unsubstantiated, sharing that he was wounded in the head and stomach.

As for Luz Maria Barrera Agaton, an investigation is still ongoing to determine if anyone was involved or responsible for her untimely passing. Our staff at Fitness Volt wish her family and friends strength and peace as they navigate this ordeal.
