About the FitnessVolt Bodybuilding Database

What This Database Is

The database covers the competitive federation landscape, including the IFBB, IFBB Professional League, NPC, AAU, NABBA, WNBF, and dozens of additional federations.

Its purpose is to make competitive bodybuilding results citable. Writers, researchers, coaches, and athletes should be able to point to a specific number and trace it back to a named primary source.

The database is maintained as a connected dataset rather than a set of scattered articles. Athlete profiles, contest pages, division histories, rankings, and API responses all read from the same underlying records.

Scale

All figures below are read from the live fitness_bodybuilding database and cached for one hour. They change as new contest results are ingested and data quality work continues.

The largest single-country representation is:

Athletes come from 147 countries, stored under 154 different country-name spellings. The spellings are folded to one name per country before anything is counted or displayed.

The largest federations or source groups by contest count are:

• IFBB Pro: 1,387
• IFBB: 1,153
• AAU: 819
• NABBA: 422

Data Sources

The database was seeded from multiple named sources and is maintained through ongoing automated ingestion and manual verification. No source is treated as authoritative in isolation. Where sources conflict, the primary official record takes precedence.

Primary Sources

Every biostat field applied from an external source is logged with the source URL and the previous and new values. The live enrichment table currently contains 106 records covering birth year, birthdate, height, and weight fields.

Identity Resolution and Correction Process

Contest scorecards often list athletes by name only. The same athlete can appear under different spellings, and two different athletes can share the same name. Both problems compound across decades of results and 110,447 athlete records.

Identity Splits

An identity split occurs when two distinct athletes were filed under one database entry and are separated back into their correct identities. The audit table bb_identity_splits currently documents 0 split rows.

Each row records the result that moved, the athlete IDs it moved from and to, both profile slugs, the named source and its URL, and the rationale for the split.

Identity Merges

An identity merge consolidates two athlete records into one canonical entry, usually when name variation across sources created two profiles for the same person. The bb_identity_merges table currently documents 292 merges.

Result Removals

Placement rows removed from the database are logged in bb_result_removals with a reason for each removal. The table currently contains 818 rows covering duplicate contests, athlete absence from official scorecards, class-split row duplication, and mis-imported contest data.

Nightly Self-Heal Process

The heal pipeline reconciles contests against primary sources. The bb_heal_log table contains 4,493 entries, including 2,016 healed runs, 1,909 dry-run passes, and 365 skipped current contests.

Data Confidence Tiers

Not all records are equally well sourced. The database uses a confidence_tier field and a source_confidence numeric score to make this explicit.

High Confidence

74,317 athletes are marked confidence_tier = high. These records have been verified against multiple independent sources or are marquee records with complete sourced profiles and no blocking identity issue.

Standard

The majority of athlete records use standard source-confidence scores from ingestion. Current live counts include 96,149 records at 0.85 and 11,108 records at 0.90.

Review Flag

1 athletes carry confidence_tier = review, a marker left by an earlier validation pass. 1 athlete record and 27 contest records currently carry has_blocking_issue, out of 110,447 and 6,783. They are held back from the surfaces that assert a clean record rather than hidden.

The marker records that a record was queried at some point, not that anything is unresolved today.

A standard-confidence record is not a low-quality record. It means the record has not undergone the additional enrichment applied to marquee athletes. The contest result itself is still sourced to a named scorecard.

Image Policy

38,953 athlete profiles currently include a photo. The sourcing situation for these images is material, so we document it directly.

Commons and Entity-Resolved Images

364 athlete records have a Wikidata entity link. Where a Wikimedia Commons P18 image can be resolved and verified, the profile can display attribution and license information from that source.

NPC and Pipeline-Sourced Images

Most athlete images were acquired through the NPC News Online image pipeline and similar scraped sources during the database build phase. We are not in a position to assert a clear rights chain for that set. A licensing determination is pending before public deployment.

Image Quality Controls

Profile images are reviewed against a reference and the verdict is written to bb_image_identity_verdicts. That table holds 3,073 verdicts:

• 1,797 confirmed as the right athlete
• 310 flagged low quality
• 53 confirmed as the wrong person
• 913 where no reference image existed to check against

A separate log, bb_image_upgrades_20260612, records 9 replacements with a higher-resolution original.

AI-generated likenesses of named athletes are banned. Athletes with no licensable photo are displayed with a generic athletic silhouette placeholder. Social media photos are not downloaded and rehosted.

Update Cadence and Freshness

The database is not static. IFBB Pro League and NPC contest results are ingested after official scorecards are published, and reconciliation checks run against primary sources. There is no fixed public ingestion schedule because the trigger is source publication.

The freshness line on this page references the actual latest update timestamp from the results table. It is not a render-time timestamp and does not advance just because the page was loaded.

Athlete biographical data such as birthdate, height, and weight is updated through manual enrichment and the correction pipeline, not by automatic scraping on every page load. The 463 athletes with verified height and weight represent the manually enriched set.

A public read-only API is available for structured access to database records. The local REST namespace for this plugin is https://fitnessvolt.com/wp-json/bodybuilding/v1/, and public API documentation is available at /bodybuilding/api/.

Embedding

Charts and data tables from the FitnessVolt Bodybuilding Database can be embedded on external sites where embed support is available. Embeds carry attribution back to the source page.

Corrections and Contact

We maintain a correction pipeline. If you identify an error in a placement, identity assignment, or athlete biographical field, submit a correction through the form on the relevant athlete or contest page.

Corrections are reviewed before application. Accepted corrections are applied to the database and logged with evidence. We cannot accept corrections based only on personal memory, forum posts, or unverifiable claims because those cannot produce an audit record.

What This Database Is Not

It Is Not a Ranking or an Opinion

Placements reflect what judges recorded on the official scorecard. We do not adjust placements, add editorial commentary to results, or choose athletes based on notoriety.

It Is Not Affiliated With Any Federation

FitnessVolt is an independent media company. The database aggregates publicly available results from official federation sources. It is not an official federation product.

It Does Not Claim to Be Exhaustive for All Eras

Pre-1965 coverage exists and is documented, but printed program books, newspaper clippings, and early AAU records are less complete than post-1965 online sources. A missing result means the source was not available or the record has not been digitized yet.

It Does Not Sponsor or Endorse Athletes

Sponsorship arrangements do not affect what results appear in the database or how athletes are described. The correction pipeline is available regardless of commercial relationship with FitnessVolt.
