How long does an Olympia champion stay on top?

82 bodybuilders have won an Olympia title in a canonical division. From first title year to last, their windows average 3.2 years, and 37 of them, 45.1%, never won one outside a single year.

Length of Olympia title windows
Title window length Champions Share
One year 37 45.1%
2 to 3 years 17 20.7%
4 to 6 years 18 22.0%
7 years or more 10 12.2%

Counted over every recorded overall Olympia win in a canonical division. The 212 division is excluded so open and 212 records stay separate.

Phil Heath 2011-2017 7 7
Harold Kelley 2018-2024 7 6

Span runs from the first title year to the last, inclusive. Title years counts the separate years an overall Olympia title was won inside that window, which is why a long span can sit beside a smaller count.

Methodology

How a peak window is defined

For an Olympia champion, the peak window is the span of their Olympia title years, first to last. The figures above cover that group, because those are the windows the contest record defines outright.

Everyone else gets a window from their best recorded placement year instead, one year either side of it, and their page says so. That is an estimate around a single result, so it is not averaged into the numbers above.

  • Derived from recorded contest results, not opinion or reputation.
  • The 212 division is excluded from Olympia-title counting to keep open and 212 records separate.
  • Athletes with too thin a contest record get an insufficient-data state rather than an invented window.
