Bodybuilding legend Dorian Yates continues to show age is just a number. At 62 years old, Yates discussed his current leg training routine and showed off his impressive leg and calf development.
“Legs have still got it!”
Dorian Yates operated his bodybuilding career like no one before him. Nicknamed ‘The Shadow,’ Yates was known for keeping a low profile but trained furiously behind the scenes. Having tested himself against the all-time great former eight-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney, Yates was no stranger to competing at the highest level in the Men’s Open. He managed to amass a total of six Mr. Olympia titles.
In retirement, Yates continues to inspire his fans with next-level longevity and health. Undergoing a Vo2 max and health check, it was determined that Yates boasted the biological age of someone ranging from 30-39 years old. Health optimization and energy preservation remain top priorities for Yates.

Although heavy training used to be an integral part of Yates’ leg routine, he says nowadays he sticks with seated leg extensions, lying hamstring curls, and bodyweight squats. He also rides his bike for high-intensity cardio.
“Gone are the days of 1500lb leg press and six plates a side on smith machine squats, but a lot of the muscle and definition remains.

I only really do seated leg extensions and both seated and lying hamstring curls along with some body weight squats, so no leg pressing or hack squats. I also ride my bike and do interval training too!”
Yates revealed that he hasn’t trained his calves in decades, though maintains them by walking often.
“And for my calves, I haven’t done calf raises in years! I mainly maintain them now by walking predominately.
Of course I have a good diet with high protein and not too many carbs nowadays.I remember Mike Mentzer once said; “What’s the secret to bodybuilding success? Choose the right parents!”
Specifically, Yates mentioned that he trains his upper body once a week and his lower body once a week for 30-45 minutes.
“Once a week, lower body, once a week upper body for half an hour to 45 minutes. I do a lot of biking as well so that’s keeping them in shape.
“How are those calves looking, oh, you’re training those once a week huh?”
“I trained them about 27 years ago. Since 1998 when I last did my calves. So, 26 years,” shares Yates.
As one of the best to ever perform on the Olympia stage, Yates is revered for his shredded physique and dedication to training. Recently, IFBB judge Terrick El Guindy and Chris Cormier examined a fantasy match-up between Yates from 1993 versus Jay Cutler during his iconic 2009 Mr. Olympia comeback.
Even at 62 years old, Dorian Yates doesn’t look to be slowing down. His longevity in retirement is an inspiration to athletes who have followed in his footsteps.
