Dorian Yates utilized every resource at his disposal to become a highly successful bodybuilding champion. In a recent Instagram post shared on November 18, 2024, Yates revealed that visualization played a major role throughout his career, which helped him win six Mr. Olympia titles from 1992-1997.
Although he wasn’t blessed with aesthetic genetics or shape, Dorian Yates carved out a one-of-a-kind bodybuilding tenure. He denied top-caliber bodybuilding threats from ever holding the Sandow trophy, such as Shawn Ray, Flex Wheeler, and Kevin Levrone.
In addition to hardcore ‘blood and guts’ training sessions, Yates used his mind to conquer the sport. Whether he was committing to his diet or designing strenuous workouts, he understood the importance of visualization, like bodybuilding great Frank Zane.

“To be a champion, you have to believe in yourself when nobody else does.
Against all odds, I became a champion!”
He committed to changing his life after spending time at a youth detention center.
“I changed my life around after spending time in that Youth Detention Centre, it was a place I promised myself I’d NEVER return to. I put my one egg into my one basket and just went for it.”
Something good was going to come from bodybuilding, whether that was becoming Mr. Olympia or expanding Temple Gym, I just knew this was the right path for me to go down.”
Yates believes in visualization, crediting it for helping him craft a winning physique through hard work and effort inside the gym.
“Visualising everything, every single detail of what I wanted and through hard work, determination and Blood & Guts effort day in and day out, I propelled myself to the top!
Believe in yourself and #CreateALegacy” Yates shared.
Dorian Yates continues to inspire fans of the sport, even in retirement. He has used stem cell therapy, yoga, Pilates, and flexibility routines to preserve his health since stepping away from the stage. At 62 years old, he boasts unbelievable longevity as well as a ripped back and huge calves.
From physical to mental health, Dorian Yates’ eclectic approach to bodybuilding produced six consecutive Mr. Olympia titles. He doesn’t underestimate the power of visualization and self-belief, even when his back was against the wall.
