While their pre-filled shake and go bottles are among our favorite meal replacements, Ample now offers the same variation of their original complete meal shake but in a bulk canister. While not quite as convenient as the aforementioned version, this does offer some advantages such as being cheaper and offering more dosing flexibility.

You still get the same great formula and taste. You can do 200 or 400 calories (25 g of protein) per serving, plus it’s low (net) carb and low sugar (1 or 2 g depending on serving size) and you also get electrolytes, prebiotics, and antioxidants minus anything artificial, and there’s no soy and gluten.

Ample was founded by Connor Young, a “young” entrepreneur who graduated with a biology degree and subsequently opened a CrossFit gym in 2011. However, after pursuing healthcare entrepreneurship in 2014 and finding it very difficult to focus on a healthy diet regime while noticing the same for the people around him who also led busy lives, Young was convinced that a unique solution was the only option. Out of this, Ample was born and it’s since added many innovative products to its lineup.

Let’s take a look at this exciting new addition to the Ample roster with a product breakdown and full review.

Ample complete meal shake in a canister offers a big advantage of the shake and go bottles. You can choose your serving size more easily and therefore the product can last a bit longer as well.

Some people may only want a 200-calorie serving for a snack or maybe you do want the full 400-calorie serving size that’ll also give you a nice 25g serving of protein.

With this you can also significantly cut down on the fat (14g vs 28g fat per serving) intake although everything else is similar and each will have less than or 1 gram of sugar per serving

Ingredients/Benefits

Let’s go over the ingredients in Ample original meal shakes.

Egg whites and Grass fed whey protein

Boiled Eggs On Plate

Why use two forms of protein? Well, sometimes two is better than one.

Egg white is one of the highest protein-containing foods at roughly 91% protein per white and it also provides all nine essential amino acids. Compared to the yoke of an egg, the white contains most of the protein and roughly 60% or more. It’s also zero fat and very low calorie.

There’s hardly anything to dislike about the amazing nutrition profile of an egg white.

Grass-fed whey is also one of the best protein sources and whey is the most common protein used in these powder supplements. The term grass-fed refers to how cows that we get the whey from are fed.

Grain-fed cows are fattened more quickly with a grain-based diet in combination with hormones for mass production. However, grass-fed dairy is said to be the opposite. The reason why many would choose grass-fed is rather obvious. It’s good to look for products that are rBGH and rBST free.

Pea protein

Fresh Pea

Pea protein is extracted from yellow peas to make a plant-based/vegan protein which is the main source for a lot of vegan powders but also vegan-focused foods too like veggie burgers, etc. It’s nearly complete with essential amino acids and offers a lot of benefits.

Interestingly, one study compared the potential muscle-building effects of pea vs whey protein vs placebo (1). The pea and whey groups saw similar and significant effects compared to placebo.

It was determined that pea protein could be a suitable alternative to whey as they elicited similar results.

Why protein is important!

Getting in enough protein every day is important for everyone but especially those who are active and those who do resistance training. Without it, your muscles cannot recover and repair and they certainly will not grow!

Additionally, protein may be the most important macronutrient for keeping you full and satiated and it contributes to weight management. Ample advertises that it can keep you full for 4+ hours. This sounds about right.

With 25g or even 13g of protein per serving, this is plenty for most people who also maintain a proper diet regime.

Try our protein calculator to determine your recommended daily intake.

Probiotics

The gut is often referred to as our second brain because it plays such a big role in bodily processes and overall health. It also consists of a large portion of immune system cells.

Probiotics have been shown to support healthy gut bacteria and a healthy immune system. Sicknesses, antibiotics and other medications, poor diets and less than optimal lifestyles strip the healthy bacteria from our guts. This is where probiotics may be very helpful.

While research is somewhat mixed on probiotics in supplement form, it may still be worth including in your diet for the potential benefits.

Coconut and macadamia nut oil

Healthy oils offer many benefits. Aside from carbohydrates, fats also provide a fuel source. Coconut oil, for instance, contains medium-chain triglycerides or MCTs which are a saturated fat that may help the body to expend more calories which can lead to fat loss (2).

Coconut Oil

MCTs are supposedly a faster burning energy source that’s transported straight to the liver for instant fuel unlike long-chain triglycerides transported through the blood to tissues (3).

Some research has shown that MCTs can reduce hunger as well, possibly due to how they break down in the body when consumed, which seems to produce ketones that might act on brain chemicals or hunger hormones to affect appetite (4).

Fiber and prebiotics

Fiber is known to reduce hunger by increasing fullness but its other roles are aiding in digestion and there’s many supposed health benefits related to cancers, blood sugar health and more.

It’s important not to confuse probiotics with prebiotics as they are different. Prebiotics are a type of carb that the body cannot digest and it feeds the probiotic bacteria. Both are needed to maintain good gut health.

Fruits and greens

It’s always a good idea to have our greens and fruits but being able to have them with your meal shakes offers a whole new meaning to convenience. These ingredients supply disease-fighting antioxidants and other healthy nutrients.

Electrolytes, vitamins and minerals

Electrolytes such as potassium, sodium and magnesium are responsible for maintaining healthy fluid levels, heart beats and muscle contractions. It’s also important for staying hydrated by keeping liquid in cells and this is must when you’re always active and on the go but also just in general.

Other ingredients

Wheatgrass

We’ve technically already categorized several of the below mentioned ingredients. However, we’ve listed the ones that we wouldn’t normally give their own sections too.

The other ingredients include high oleic sunflower oil, soluble tapioca fiber, sunflower lecithin, dried honey, organic psyllium husk, sea salt, organic wheatgrass, lemon juice powder, organic guar gum, cinnamon, organic barley grass, natural flavors, and probiotic blend.

Ample meal shakes are naturally sweetened using monk fruit extract and stevia. While I personally don’t mind these sweeteners, some may not like them which is something to consider.

Vitamins and minerals: calcium citrate, potassium bicarbonate, magnesium citrate, vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 plays a role in heart function, immune health, and more.

Cost

One of the most important factors when most people decide on choosing a product, let’s talk about what you’ll pay for a canister of Ample meal shakes including cost per serving.

Ample Meal Shakes

Ample is a little pricey especially if you do the full two-scoop servings, however, convenience also costs a little more but is it worth it? In this case and what this product really offers, we would say so!

If you’re looking to purchase Ample meal powder, then you have two options.

  • One time purchase: $5.37/meal
  • Subscribe and save 15%: $4.48/meal

A canister supplies 15 400-calorie servings (two scoops) or 30 200-calorie servings (one scoop).

As with most products that offer a few different purchase options, the more you commit upfront the less you’ll pay overall. For example, rather than spend $79 with the one-time purchase option, you could save $12 although you’ll continue to receive a bottle every 4 weeks. The pricier option is good if you just want to try it out before committing to the subscription.

We do like that Ample bulk canister ships fast and free.

This is subjective and you’ll have to choose based on whichever option best suits your needs.

Should You Try Ample Complete Meal Shakes in Bulk?

Having Ample in a bulk canister form gives you even more options now. Simply measure out the desired serving whether full or half, mix it with your liquid of choice and you’ve got a convenient and very healthy nutrition alternative.

Ample complete meal shakes supply you with the perfect amount of nutrients and its taste is well received just like the other offerings in their lineup.

While not super cheap for a canister, the quality and choice of ingredient is something to consider and for that we have to give this product a big thumbs up.
