Recently, Calum Von Moger shared on YouTube how he’d get his meals in while he was bulking, often resorting to blending his food. He made it explicitly clear it wasn’t something he enjoyed but needed to do nonetheless.
“I’d sub out some of those meals. I’d blend them. Or I’d just have like a smoothie. Sometimes I just blend the meal and just drink them with water, just add water and the rice and drink that shit in the blender. Whatever it takes. Just to get that food in. I didn’t enjoy eating it.”
“It’s just fuel. You look at it not as food or as a taste; you look at it as fuel. You got to change the mentality of what food is. It’s not something you enjoy. It’s something you consume.”
Moger explains that he would break down his meals in terms of nutrition rather than flavor.
“It was just a meal from the day before, like rice, spinach, egg, tuna, banana, water, oats, a bit of ice cream for some flavor, yeah. You just come up with weird concoctions, oh that’s got protein. You’re not looking at it like flavor, you’re looking at nutritional value” Moger said.
“You look at everything as a protein, as a carb, as a fat, as a vitamin, as a mineral, you don’t look at it like of prawn or steak or chips, it’s like fat, sugar, carbs.”
He also shared his go-to smoothie for breakfast.
“When I was bulking, my smoothie in the morning would consist of four whole raw eggs four or five whole raw eggs, protein powder, yogurt, milk, honey, sometimes some spinach, peanut butter, and creatine, and yeah, maybe that’s about it and just blend that up.”
From thoughts of suicide, and health scares, to his doubts about ever walking again, Calum Von Moger doesn’t underestimate what life can throw at him. He continues to focus on his recovery and admits the gym has been a useful tool for him, especially for mental fortitude.
While we are unsure of when you can expect to see Calum Von Moger on stage again, at least you have his trusty smoothie recipe. If blended tuna and water aren’t your thing, that’s okay, there are other options.
