To be one of the few astronauts in the world you are required to be in excellent physical condition. However once you get to space, that does not mean you can slack on your workout.

For many, taking a rocket ship to space is nothing but a dream. However there are a few people who are able to make that dream a reality, through rigorous training and a lifetime of dedication. Then, if they are lucky enough to make it all the way to space, they may find themselves on the International Space Station, where they may stay for a long time.

Some people may think that being in space with zero gravity means that you do not have to take your fitness as seriously, but this is not the case. There is actually more of a demand for you to stay in shape, as your leg muscles can deteriorate if you are not careful. So the demand for regular exercise is even greater in space.

That being said, the International Space Station is outfitted with a bit of an unconventional training room for astronauts to use. A recent video surfaced, showing this training facility in use, as they get in an intense workout.

Working out in space is obviously much different than hitting the gym at home. However there are some real similarities too, as you can see in the video. The astronauts train on a machine that allows them to do squats and leg presses, as well as running on the treadmill, and a standing bike. The main difference is that they have to be strapped into the machine to stop from floating away.

With massive leaps being taken in the field of commercial space travel, it may not be long before a layperson can find themselves off the planet. So it is good to keep in mind the types of exercises you may find yourself doing if you really shoot for the stars.
